About the project

It is your differences that make you glorious.

The Cure

The Cure is a stop-motion, animated, fantasy film about a man’s journey to an unknown destination in search of a cure. A cure for his "strange" physicality.

Take a look at the first cut here.

A bit more about the story

Set inside a train, the story is a heart-warming tale of a man on a quest to get rid of his superficial "deformities". The pressure to conform and blend in, turns out to be an obstacle in his path of self-discovery. He finds himself caught up in a desperate tug-of-war between the real and imaginary worlds. Will the world's perceived realities win or will reason prevail?

Some cool facts!

  • We have used experimental Soot animation!
  • All the models are hand-carved and the various facial expressions are all done using replicable masks.
  • Almost all of the set is made up of repurposed household items like steel bowls and matchboxes and storage lids.
  • The train actually works, down to the last crank shaft.
  • There are no spoken words in the movie. I have often felt that words are poor containers for the vast nuances of emotions that we could feel.

A little about me

I am Kapil Gopinathan, an independent animation filmmaker from the National institute of Design, Ahmedabad. This film is the final diploma animation film as part of the 3-year post-graduation animation film design curriculum.

I am a craftsman before being an artist

The thing that makes me most happy is creating new things out of any old scrap lying around. An empty paper cup, left alone with me soon turns into a crown for a king, or a little house for a little elf! I really enjoy doing it. So, when it came to my final animation diploma project, I wanted to marry this love for making things, with the medium of animation, to tell a story.

The personal journey that inspired me to make this film

I have always wanted to tell my story and felt that most people could relate to it. The pressure of trying to conform was something I had always felt deeply, and it was very liberating when I finally started living on the NID campus with its diversity of lifestyles and opinions. I realized that it was really OK to not be just like everyone else. I want to depict in animation — that feeling of freedom that I once felt.

Progress, so far

The film comprises of three acts.

The first act, which had three different mediums (including experimental soot animation medium) has been completed.

Visit the link to view the completed scenes here.

The story, conceptualization, character design, 3D animatics and a tentative background score are also all in place.

Take a look at all the effort that went into the hand-made sets, costumes and characters here.

Milestones yet to accomplish

I still need to construct 2 sets and detail out 3 more characters. The shooting studio needs to be set up with lighting, and camera tracks need to be laid for the remaining shoot. Post that, I will have to precisely animate the film frame by frame for the second and third acts. After all the footage is shot, I will need professional help for the final sound editing and background score composition. Currently all the music in the film is Creative Commons licensed.

Why do you want your film to be screened at Chitrakatha?

Chitrakatha is the one, and only International student animation festival that happens in India — plus it is hosted by my alma mater. My film will be seen by a large section of animators from around the world. Without this opportunity, I probably would not get the chance to show this film to such a wide global audience. I feel that knowing their reactions and criticism about my project can really help me improve in the future.

I have already been shortlisted by NID and Wishberry to be able to participate in this crowdfunding campaign. Now, my film just needs YOU to get to the finish line.

Take a look at the rewards lined up for YOU!

Why crowdfunding?

Once I had the outline of the story, I kickstarted production with high hopes and my own funding. I always knew that it'll be a struggle, but never had I imagined it to be so tough. I have done my best with my skill-set to get the desired and expected result, but it has been a long and expensive journey. Positive reviews from critics for the work done so far keep me motivated, but the question about finances is a real one. I really don’t want halt the journey mid-way. With all of your contribution, I can complete the movie and bring it to fruition. I feel like Wishberry is doing a great job in building a community of filmmakers, musicians, designers and artists, who can support each other for a common cause. Crowdfunding is a great platform for art enthusiasts to contribute. The audience gets to be the judge, and your contribution itself is both evaluation, and finally, acceptance of my movie. With your funding, we can bring this movie to a wider audience by screening it in global festivals, shows and events.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 30000 in Production

Rs. 30000 in Compositing

Rs. 20000 in sound

Rs. 12000 in Post-production

Rs. 8000 in Admin

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

Stop-motion animation is a complicated process with little room for mistakes as it doesn’t have chances of retakes. If anything goes wrong in the middle of a shoot, the entire shot needs to be retaken from start to end, in frame-to-frame clicks.
The scope of my project is ambitious, and it requires a lot of resources like highly-detailed sets and precisely functional armature puppets. There is also all the high-end hardware required for shooting, lighting and editing. Juggling all these challenges is tough for me. In order to finish it given the time and money constraints, further collaboration is required. That is where YOU come in.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

Being the co-producers of the film, you will become a part of OUR production house, creating a movie, which is first-of-its-kind, integrating a set of mediums rarely seen in existing animated movies. With your help, we can bring this movie to a wider audience by screening it in global festivals, shows and events. Plus, I will make sure you receive beautiful gifts for all your support!
A big vote of confidence was getting shortlisted by Wishberry and NID. I have already put in everything to get so far. Now, all I need is for you to come ahead and believe in my journey.

Chitrakatha, what's that all about?

Wishberry and National Institute of Design (NID) have come forward with this initiative — Script 2 Screen. It encourages animation in the country by making sure students can screen their films at Chitrakatha, a biennial, international festival where the best of the Industry come forward to celebrate and notice talent. We entered the competition and some of us were selected to raise funds via crowdfunding. Through this we will be able to finish our student films and showcase them at Chitrakatha. This is a huge platform for college students as well as those who’ve just finished college! We will be able to show our work to experts and gain so much exposure!

Future plans for the project?

I want to speed up the production process and finish the project ASAP. Ball-park estimates for time of release is mid-2018. Once done, I want to pitch this film in as many international animation festivals as possible.

What happens when we don't raise enough money?

I'll not be able to showcase my film at Chitrakatha! If I don't raise enough money, I will not finish the film and the world will fall short of another professional, animated, badass short film. *cough cough

Animation and India: Your thoughts

It is tough for an independent artist in India to turn ideas inside his head into reality. They lack not only funds but also appreciation and encouragement from society. Animation is often seen as something trivial and for children. Due to all these, as well as time and money pressures, a lot of Indian animations lack in terms of storytelling, technicality and visual narration. Therefore, Indian animators are underrated and rejected by other western countries and this criticism further reduces the confidence in art education in India, creating a vicious loop.

But animation can be a powerful and beautiful medium to tell stories. Through animation, one could convey ideas to any crowd, irrespective of their age or the language they communicate in. It can deeply touch people's hearts. As an animator from India, I want to remedy this lack of faith in Indian animators.
