A Stomach for Shit

  • That’s vital for writing about violence and of course reading about it. As an antidote, I’ll offer you my services as a poet. I am no Eliot but you may discover I’m not half bad if you hire me to write a paean to your lover or a limerick about your boss. Verse comes to worst, you’ll shove it and further develop your stomach for shit.

About the project

A hideously compelling story of three people who were once part of a genocide in India.

Violence in its extreme, is the most terrifying and perplexing part of who we are as people. When a whole group of people commit extreme violence together, it’s even more bewildering. Who are these individuals that can rape a pregnant woman and dash her half-formed foetus to the ground on one day and then go back to `life as usual’ after the anger is spent? These are the questions I am trying to answer as I write `The Anatomy Of Hate.’ The book looks closely at members of a religiously motivated lynch mob to understand what turned these individuals to commit hate crimes. But through members of this mob, the book is telling a universal story, of how all of us have a dark side, which; under extreme stress, a history of prejudice and a certain set of circumstances, can take over.

What is this book about?

Much has been written of the hate crimes that took place in Gujarat in the year 2002. But none of it has focused on the individuals that perpetrated the riots. This book makes an attempt to tell the story of the perpetrators of violence instead of its victims, with a firm belief that unless we learn to look at how violence is made within individual minds, we cannot possibly find a way to unmake it. This book is NOT an attempt to hurt the sentiments of any ethnicity in India.

How much of the book is done?

Half the research of this book is done. This is the second half of my journey that I am now reaching out to you for. It will take a year to get the research and writing done and I aim for it to be out in print by December 2017.

Want more on the book? Here’s the background.

Our democracy in India is both robust and fragile. It was born in 1947, of a non-violent and Gandhian struggle for independence from the British. However, violence was equally a part of its birth as two nations - India and Pakistan were carved from rivers of blood, half a million people killed over religion. Ever since, any pull towards fanaticism - by any religious group - causes an earthquake like rupture in our fragile secular fabric. In the last few years in particular, this schism has opened up again, with the rise of hate crimes committed by religious fringe groups. And the origin of this new wound goes back to the year 2002.

Why crowdfunding?

As a journalist I have tracked the 2002 Gujarat story for over a decade. I lived in the state and reported from the ground the year after the mass violence took place and developed strong links with people from then on. This is how I managed to get the perpetrators of violence to share their stories. I believe their admissions are a rare and precious gift which puts me in a unique position to deliver on the goals I have set out.

In addition, I have the support of one of the best publishers - Harper Collins India. And India's best known mind on politics and psychology - Professor Ashis Nandy, who says he is happy to mentor me in this project.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 320000 in Living Expenses

Rs. 80000 in Admin Fee

Rs. 300000 in Research and Travel

Rs. 50000 in Legal Fees

Rs. 50000 in Translation Fees

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The biggest risk with my project is of being misunderstood. The 2002 Gujarat riots is a subject that is closed and the word on the ground is that it is best forgotten. I do however have a robust plan in place to tackle these apprehensions. First, I tell people that if they really put their ear to the ground they will hear the fear and despair and guilt of people that were connected with or part of the violence of 2002. I tell them that unless we learn to look at that trauma, it will not go away. I am completely transparent in my intent and this has allayed the fears of skeptics who think that my project has a narrow goal or that I am somehow writing this with the backing of political parties opposed to the present government. When people who make these accusations look at my body of work closely, they see that as a journalist I have been motivated only by facts and that I have always been deeply critical of injustice wherever that takes place and at the behest of every possible political dispensation, in India and abroad. I also have access to the best lawyers and advisors in the media as well is in outreach on the ground, to help if anyone has any large concerns or fears they would like addressed.

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

If I cannot raise the money I target, I will take a loan or alternatively get a job and have to make trips back and forth to Gujarat when I can to finish the book but of course that will take much longer than a year...but there is absolutely no way I will give this up no matter what the obstacles in my way. I believe this has the power to change a lot and I will not give it up for anything.

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

Everything I say and do rides on my reputation. It' finally all comes down to trust. That is the only currency a journalist or a writer has - trust. But there are objectively speaking many checks and balances in place as well to make you feel more secure about putting your money on this project. Firstly, I have a fabulous publisher on board - Harper Collins India, with whom I have a written contract. They will make sure I do not run away with the money since their reputation rides on having put their faith in me. I also have the support of a team which of people that are also putting their reputation at stake. They will catch me by the collar if I try and run, since they're in the media and publishing worlds and know how to find me if I try and vanish.

We need more good humans on the planet and you seem to be one of them. It is always an uphill task to creat awareness of injustice anywhere in the world. Moreso under the current dispensation in our country . Your effort is a laudatory. May God bless you.

This is a very important project especially now, when hate has become an intimate part of our selfhood(s). I do not have any profound message to give here. I have a small wish that this project will help in the process of turning us away from such genocidal politics, a politics that only teaches us to hate one another. This unfortunate land and its people, I include myself in it, are in much need of such a project which could make us realise that we need to develop in ourselves something called shame instead of a propensity to violence.
