About the project

A co-production between Lotus Film & TV Production (India) and Real Ficção (Portugal), Special Envoy is a quest to bring to light the inspiring yet unknown mission of an Indian whose life is cut short in the Mozambican presidential plane crash in 1986.

Very subtly the story builds up to a point where the chess pieces metamorphose into real life characters. The life story of Aquino de Bragança and his bond with Samora Machel are magnetically drawn onto the chess table till the final checkmate dictates its end.

This movie is a tribute to the dauntless Spirit of Aquino de Braganza and all those who continue fighting for equality and peace.

What is Special Envoy about?

Special Envoy is a quest to bring to light the friendship between Aquino de Bragança – an Indian intellectual and journalist and Samora Machel – a male nurse who was to be the first president of his country.  Their friendship is sealed tragically by a plane crash on 19th October 1986.

Aquino de Bragança had an aim: to fight against colonialism and help Goa and all African countries to obtain independence and peace.

What is unique about this documentary?

Many leaders who changed the course of history in the last 50 years, and like Aquino had fought colonialism, have been portrayed in fiction movies and documentaries. Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe, Amilcar Cabral are good examples of this. Interestingly enough, these were all Aquino’s companions.

Special Envoy is the first documentary on this personality, Aquino de Braganza and the unique bond of the friendship he shared with Samora Machel.

What inspired me to start this project?

I came across Aquino de Braganza (the hero of the documentary) on the net and suddenly I realized I heard about him many years back when I was just 13 years. Aquino died in a plane crash on my birthday and I remember watching the news about the plane crash.

Immediately I started researching about him and that faint memory recollection became a passion and a mission – to bring to life his story.

Of all the documentaries I have made, this was the one who touched me the most. While reading about Aquino I found out that we have a lot in common.

We share a date: 19th Oct 1986 (the day I was born/ the day he died), we both have a daughter named Maya and we both migrated with the same age - Aquino from Goa to Mozambique and me from Portugal to Goa.

The first days when I started reading a book that his wife Silvia Braganza wrote about him, I could not sleep. I had fallen in love with a man I never met.

Making a documentary about him became like an obsession. I started the pre-production on his birthday - 6th April and finish shooting on 19th October 2016 when the whole team cut a cake to celebrate my birthday and drank champagne in his honor.

So saying that the making of this documentary was “a great experience” is not enough. It is an act of love.

I believe that all of us can have a little of Aquino within. We need to bring that part of us to the real word. Fight for peace and justice wherever we live. We surely can’t fight for the whole world, but each one of us can give a little of our time to others like he did.

We tend to be ruled by work and family. Our whole life is ruled by it: have breakfast, go to work, pick up kids from tutions or school, come home, have dinner.

What if, one day, just one day, we decide to dedicate that time to someone who needs, or to a village that needs help. Our family will remain intact, our work will be the same.

So, what if?

How was your experience while making this documentary?

It is imperative to know who Aquino de Braganza was and the heritage he left for humanity. I didn't predict how difficult would be to film the game of chess and even though I had a preview of the game through a computer software, seeing live in front of me was quite an experience. I could really feel these characters being moved and was very excited when we reached to those crucial moments when one move, can change the whole game. For example when the queen is captured in the final game and returns back representing a new life in Aquino's life.

To see the script come to life was also something that moved me deeply. Here was the story of a man coming to life. I felt it like a huge responsibility,  and I still do.

Why crowdfunding?

I think crowdfunding is a way to reach to our friends, to make them know what we are doing and believe in. I would be happy to know that I have the contribution of many of my friends and the change that I believe I can bring, can start from here.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 100000 in Sound design, foley and mixing

Rs. 100000 in Original score

Rs. 100000 in Film archives

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The challenges is that not everybody might understand the movie because till today, there are citizens who feel Mozambique and other ex-colonies of Portugal were better when they belonged to Portugal. Mostly the generation before mine, the millions of people who died during the war and the other million who had to re-locate to Portugal after Mozambique became independent. Changes are never easy and history takes time to be accepted. Many wounds have still to be healed on both sides.
This story reveals a personality, that most people don’t know, who did not belong to any of the mentioned countries and who tried to create a bond between them, where there wouldn’t be winners or losers.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

If most of the funders are my own friends, I am sure they believe in me. I have been making documentaries for a long time and they know I keep on producing and never leave anything behind.
When I decide to do something, there is no looking back.
