About the project

Smriti narrates the story of a young boy's battle against his biggest fear.

This animated short deals with the tale of a 10-year-old boy, his fear of the dark, and how he manages to overcome it and battle his inner demons.

A bit on developing the tale

The characters have been inspired by my own childhood memories (smriti is the Hindi term for memory). It begins with the roaring sound of thunder that awakens 10-year-old Risabh, who suddenly has an uncontrollable urge to pee. Terrified of the dark, he looks for the tube-light switch only to realise that the power has been cut-off due to the storm. After failing to awaken his brother for help, Risabh gathers the courage to go to the washroom by himself. What happens next?

A bit about me, and the film

My name is Risabh Banshkar, and I'm a student of the National Institute of Design. I am working on this film as I'm fascinated with how children think, understand and make sense of the world around them. I want to make films about such stories of people’s childhood, hence started with my own. I believe those stories are precious and should be kept alive through films.

How much of the film has been done and what is left?

I have successfully completed the pre-production of the film, which includes the script, storyboard, character design, animation and background. And, what remains now is the final animation, sound design, music, final line art and compositing.

What's so special about the film?

The film's animation is done using a rare classical form of animation, which basically means that every frame is hand drawn. This film is basically, my childhood on celluloid! In fact, even the house is animated in order to resemble my grandmother’s place, which is where the incident took place. Even the cat that features in the film, is one from my childhood that strolled around the house and always appeared strangely at random places.

Why do you want your film to be screened at Chitrakatha?

Chitrakatha is the biggest platform in India to showcase your work to people from all over the world. The festival provides an opportunity to talk to other animation filmmakers and receive their feedback for the same. It would be an absolute honour to get my film screened at Chitrakatha.

Do check out a few samples of the Smriti cool T-Shirts ready as rewards for you!

Why crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding works as a great option to get creative work done on your terms. Also, it allows an artist to evaluate their content directly by an audience at large. I have already been chosen by Wishberry and NID to work on my film, now I need you to come forward and join me in my journey. The only way I can get my film showcased at Chitrakatha, is if my project is fully funded.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 28000 in Final Animation

Rs. 9000 in Backgrounds and elements

Rs. 24000 in Compositing

Rs. 31000 in Music and sound

Rs. 8000 in Admin Cost

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The biggest challenge of the project is going to be managing the pipeline of the film as I am doing it alone, but as I have completed the preproduction and the rough animation alone I am pretty confident about the rest of the process. After the target amount is reached the project can run smoothly because I have sought for good professional help and now the only challenge is money.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

I love to tell stories, especially through animation. All of my education which is the last five years has been in Animated Filmmaking. The story is from my own childhood and that is why I am working day and night with all my dedication to justify the emotions in the film and to deliver it on time. Wishberry and The National Institute of Design have shown their belief in my work by selecting me amongst many other entries to raise funds. Now, I need your support to take Indian animation to great heights and make sure my film can get screened at Chitrakatha.

What is this initiative all about?

Wishberry and National Institute of Design (NID) have come forward with this initiative — Script 2 Screen. It encourages animation in the country by making sure students can screen their films at Chitrakatha, a biennial, international festival where the best of the Industry comes forward to celebrate and notice talent. We entered the competition and were selected to raise funds via crowdfunding. Through this we will be able to finish our student films and showcase them at Chitrakatha. This is a huge platform for college students as well as those who’ve just finished college! We will be able to show our work to experts and gain so much exposure!

Animation and India. Thoughts?

Animation in India is gaining strength. Now, it is possible to make an animated series or an animated film without going to major production houses. These production houses not only kill time but they also kill ideas. Websites like Wishberry that help raise funds without compromising on any aspect of the story, are our saving grace.
