About the project

Sister of the Trees is a documentary, directed by Camila Menéndez and Lucas Peñafort about a village called Piplantri in Rajasthan, India where the people celebrate the birth of a girl child in the family by planting 111 trees on the village’s grazing commons. This initiative began in 2005 and has already turned Piplantri into an oasis. Where there was only mining waste, lack of water and violence against women — today there is greenery,  drinking water, literacy and ample employment opportunities for the locals.

About the documentary

The documentary intimately portrays the life of the women of Piplantri, the positive changes and also the challenges they face.

You will see courageous women like Kala—who is setting forth an inspiring example of empowerment by working outside the house and earning her own income independently.  Bhavari, a strong and joyful woman in her thirties, who couldn’t finish primary school, but is supporting her daughter Nikita's dream to become a doctor one day. Leela, a young mother who is planting trees in the name of her newly born girl and with this simple gesture, opening a range of possibilities for her future.

The history

This movement was spearheaded by a man named Shyam Sunder Paliwal who lost his 16 year old daughter. He decided to plant a tree in her memory. In his sorrow, he couldn’t believe that sometimes people could put an end to their own daughter’s life, just for economical reasons.

Mr. Paliwal went on to become the village Sarpanch. He realized, that trees should be planted not to commemorate death but to celebrate every girl’s life. And this is how the idea was born. He convinced the villagers one at a time that the basis of a bright future was growing trees, saving water and educating the girls.

Why crowdfunding?

Since Sisters of the Trees is a non-profit project, the first question a film producer asks us is, "who is the superstar in your film?" When we tell them that we don't have celebrities, we only have heroines in our film - it fails to convince their number crunching minds. Besides that, we want to do crowdfunding because we think that the message is stronger if we are all committed to spread it. Sister of the Trees should not labelled just as a movie some Argentinians came to India and shot, our hope is to be an ambassador of the great India and for that you need to be part of it. More importantly, we feel that this a story of radical social change that not many people here in India are aware of. We want to change that by spreading awareness, so that everyone in this country and abroad can emulate what Piplantri has done for their community and improve their way of living too.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 300000 in Editing/ Color correction

Rs. 180000 in Sound edition/Sound mix

Rs. 150000 in DCP / LTO

Rs. 120000 in Visual effects

Rs. 100000 in Subtitles and translation

Rs. 150000 in Music Recording

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The biggest challenge is for us to raise the funds we need through crowdfunding and finish the film. We are looking forward to screen the movie in film festivals across Europe and India this year. So the risk is that if we cannot raise the funds for finishing the movie, we are out of the festivals and this inspiring story from Rajasthan will get lost.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

In Argentina we like to say "Si le das a un hombre un pescado, comerá un día, pero si le das una caña de pescar comerá todos los días", which means that instead of giving someone a fish so they can eat for a day, we should give them a rod so they can eat everyday.

Celebrating a girl’s life is giving her education so she might become a self-dependent woman one day. By collaborating with us, together we can convey the message that reality can be changed. In this way you are not only saving today’s girls but all of them that are to be born.
