About the project

Rough Book is a hard-hitting and thought-provoking film that takes a long and strong look at the education system in India. Although it is one of the finest systems in the world, the lacunae in the system have created issues which, though non-existent 15 years ago, are threatening to clog the channels of learning in contemporary India today.

What is Rough Book?

Rough Book is the story of Santoshi – a school teacher who loves her job. Santoshi is married to an Income Tax Officer, who turns out to be corrupt. She leaves him, leaves her teaching job and runs back to the SOS school (an orphanage) where she has been brought up. Her mentor and foster mother Maa, encourages her to go back and learn how to face life, even if it is filled with failures.
In the new school where Santoshi is posted, she gets to teach the students in the D division, consisting of the most backward students. While she gains their respect and pushes them in a better direction, certain circumstances compel her to face suspension. How she carries on teaching her students, gets them to face their problems, and become winners, forms the bulk of the story.

Who is making this film?

We are Aerika Cineworks, a young and dynamic boutique production house, led by Aakash Chaudhry. We are in the business of making, marketing and distributing meaningful and creative content across all media. Aerika Cineworks was founded with an aim to create cinema that is not just entertaining but also educational and empowering.

What motivated us to make this film?

We want to be the face of sensitive and sensible cinema. Rough Book is an apt start in this direction. Very few films actually tackle the Bermuda triangle that is education, and Rough Book wanted to do it in a way that would appeal to audiences from ages 7 to 70.

What makes our film different from films that have tackled the issues plaguing the education system in the past?

Rough Book doesn’t appeal just to the youth or the college going audience. In spite of its mature subject, the film has been understood and appreciated by students of the 6th grade too! This is a film that transcends all age groups. In one of those rare moments in Indian cinema, a film has been so happily accepted by kids, teenagers, their parents and their teachers, where normally these are the very segments that do not agree with one another. The film is being screened for schools all over and there is a great demand for this, though the film is about college going children. The education revolution is not just a phrase; Rough Book is actually making it happen!

What all has the film achieved so far?

Rough Book won Best Film at the Houston Indian Film festival, Best Story at the Washington South Asian Film Festival and made its presence felt by being the Closing Night event at the Dallas Fortworth South Asian Film Festival, the New York Indian Film Festival and the San Francisco Global Film Festival. It got a standing ovation at MAMI 2015 and the ALLIFF 2015 in Kochi, and won Ananth Mahadevan Best Director at the Rajasthan International Film Festival.

More than 120 principals and teachers of various schools across India have seen the film with a view of showing it to their students. The film is such that ALL 120 principals have screened the film for their children, and more than 25,000 students across the country have already viewed the film.

How did we go about making this film?

The film was shot in 26 shooting days in Mumbai, outside Mumbai at the Symbiosis University in Pune, and on the mountains of the Malshej Ghat.

The film uses the combined services of hugely professional actors like Tannishtha Chatterjee, Ram Kapoor, Kaizaad Kotwal, Joy Sengupta and Jayati Bhatia, along with brand new college students (Rohin Punjabi, Neel Gagdani, Gaurav Choraria) who were seeing a camera for the first time. And marks the launch of a new star, Amaan F. Khan, who will, we are sure, make his mark in the industry.
The International awards are a testimony of the high standards set for the film.

Why crowdfunding?

We are a team of dedicated professionals, as you can see from the information available to you; but more important, this is too important a film to not look at and support. We are not looking for funding to make the film; we have spent our money doing that already. We are not looking for funding to find buyers and sell the film; that would be counterproductive to the very movement of independent cinema, and there would be no guarantee that the buyer would nurture the film the way we have done. The best way we can explain why you should believe in us is by telling you that we have already taken the hardest way out ourselves, and having come so far, we need your strength on the last few miles!

How will the money be used?

Rs. 750000 in Publicity

Rs. 500000 in Marketing

Rs. 375000 in Admin Cost

Rs. 500000 in Cinema Materials

Rs. 375000 in Digital Screening Costs

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

In actual fact, there are no risks associated with the project, since the film is already made, has done the festival route and won the awards it needed to; Cinepolis has already promised that it will partner the film through its select Cinepolis release; so we guess that the biggest risk that we face is that we may not achieve as much funding as we would like, and the film may not reach the cinemas by achieving a robust buzz across media. The film has received a clear U Certificate, with no cuts. These achievements have mitigated most risks.

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

If we don’t achieve our financial target, nothing much happens to the funder; you get all your money back! For us, the roof falls on our head, as this wonderful labour of love goes unnoticed, the way so many other gems of indie cinema have in the past. However, for us, the Rough Book team, it’s a very personal fight, and we will make sure we achieve our targets.

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

It comes down to integrity. We have only one thing to tell you, we believe in ourselves and we have built our credibility over the years by making good films. We do need your support, but this is a mere battle; the war for a better ecosystem for education in India, for a better deal for our students, for a better deal for our teachers is an ongoing war. The other war, for independent cinema is as big and as crucial for us. And we are not going to win this by running away from you!
