About the project

Capturing the highs and lows around Huntington’s Disease – a rare incurable genetic disorder, the film follows five families as they battle with loss, shame, taboo, hope and acceptance under the cultural connotations of Indian Society.

For years, people have lived in fear of Huntington’s disease because of its mass stigmatization – barring men and women from even getting tested. This has led to less attention in finding a cure for the disease. Today, as we try and improve the healthcare for patients at risk, we still understand very little of how living with an incurable genetic disease can change our perceptions towards life and humanity!

Through the film, we want to question our perception of people and their behaviour towards the diseased community. We want the underdogs to fight for all of humanity, be treated rightfully, and most importantly, equally, and give hope to every single one of us, to dream and aspire to a better, if not brighter, future.

The documentary would span the scientific advancements for Huntington’s, allowing a largely unaware public to be informed and urge researchers to improve healthcare in India. We speak about the meaning of life through topics like euthanasia, genetic testing for an incurable disease, gene editing, living with disabilities, and the reasons behind stigmatisation of diseases in all human societies, but in the Indian context specifically.

- - -   MEET OUR FAMILIES!  - - -

Bhakti resides in Mumbai with her parents. Bhakti’s mother started showing symptoms of Huntington’s when Bhakti was about 8. In her 20s, Bhakti decided to get herself tested for the disease. Against constant persuasion she still went for the test, but walked away minutes before the genealogist called her in - realising she really didn’t want to know.

Koushik married Sudha 20 years ago, but little did he know that her family and she were affected by Huntington’s. Koushik’s life as a caregiver is spectacular as he fights against all odds.

Arjun is the elder brother of the director, Megha. He decided not to get tested because he doesn’t believe finding out would change how he chooses to live his life. Arjun told his wife’s family early on about the disease, keeping them in the know, and promised his sister that he would take care of her.

Sunil resides in the small town of Hassan, Karnataka and lives with his mother, and his younger brother, Bharath, who is affected with Juvenile Huntington’s. In the past, 3 members of Sunil’s family have committed suicide due to the stigma they faced from the disease. Sunil, has not tested himself, and chooses not to.

Know more about Sunil's story here

Sri Harika’s mother, grandfather and grand-aunt had Huntington’s. Harika grew up traumatised with an ugly relationship with her mother, not understanding why she was different. In a small village near her hometown, families with such diseases are locked away in dark rooms.

A Message from the Director

“Coming from a family with a long history of Huntington’s Disease, and having inherited the disease myself, I took the decision to document the disease to serve as a revelation of the society we live in, and the community I accidentally happened to belong to.

The creation and completion of this film is not just for me, or even for the Huntington’s community in India - but for anybody who has lived with or known someone who has felt stigmatised because of their mental or physical conditions, or for being different in a society that finds it easier to brush problems under the carpet instead of facing it head-on.

I believe this film will be a catalyst in the movement that encourages every person to speak out loud and freely, to not feel marginalised and be truly accepted, whatever they’ve been handed by life.”

Why crowdfunding?

Since we want our audience to clearly gain information from the film - the scientific data and research will be translated into motion graphics, while animation sequences will depict philosophical stories, and represent family members who have passed away from the disease as want to make their souls come alive, on screen. We want this film to be ready soon so that the Huntington’s community can see it as they are integral to the creation of the film. Henceforth, we want to start work on a feature length film so that the newly formed HD Society of India can use it for their seminars and studies and spread the word faster. Crowdfunding will help hugely in bringing this film to life and completing it by the deadline we have set upon ourselves - August, 2019.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 170000 in Equipment Rental

Rs. 50000 in Production Crew

Rs. 50000 in Travel, Food & Lodging

Rs. 200000 in Animation & Motion Graphics

Rs. 50000 in Sound Design & Music

Rs. 30000 in Admin Fees

Rs. 50000 in Film Festivals & Distribution

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

If we don’t meet our target amount we will return the money to the contributors!

It's an all or nothing approach that we have decided to take. This is a huge risk that we’re taking, moreover travelling on a road less travelled!

Hence, we’re hoping to cross this hurdle, and put across the best version of the film, that it deserves, truly and more importantly, honestly.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

5 REASONS TO MAKE THIS FILM

1. The film is a personal journey in the world of many personal journeys, where like Shakespeare said: "All the worlds a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances."

2. To spread the word about Huntington’s.

3. To provide justice to families with Huntington's Disease. We’ve let them and many other marginalised communities down as a society by stigmatising the disease and the people associated with it.

4. The films wants to inform people of the social evils lurking around us, that we sometimes fail to notice.

5. The film wants to aspire change; change in how things function, change in terms of value of life and finally change as a philosophy.

5 REASONS TO FUND THIS FILM

1. Be a part of change! People hardly know about the existence of the disease, let alone trying to find a cure for it.

2. Crowdfunding this film will allow us to logistically reach a step closer to our dream, allowing us to focus on the creative, raw aspect of storytelling that the narrative demands.

3. We want to tell the most honest story, and that demands us to travel to different Indias within India. The funding will allow us to cover our expenses, travel and lodging.

4. We want the film to be used for educational and research purposes, to be studied and viewed at seminars that could further the intent of finding a cure for Huntington’s.

5. The film wants to give a reality check, through real-life stories, in order to make a difference.
