About the project

Through documenting the lives of people who live in Mumbai, their stories, attires, thoughts, language and the city’s structures in which all these dwells, The People Place Project wants to offer you a perspective and an introspection of the larger fabric we’re all a part of. This time they want to document the lives of people from Ahmedabad and Kochi and bring out a book for the same.

What is the project about?
The People Place Project is an initiative to chronicle the NOW – the life and times we live in. Through a lens of people, we hope to pin together the narrative of how we have come to be here - our language, our thoughts, our attire, our structures - everything that defines us. We like to call it a mapping project - exploring a city/place with the stories of the people.
How was People Place Project born?
Started in 2014 as an academic exercise in the Design Variable Architecture Studio, with 10 architecture interns, the idea was to explore and map the city of Mumbai, through the stories of its people. This culminated as our first publication People Called Mumbai. With this framework of knowing cities through its people, the project now aims to travel across the prime cities of India and the globe.
Why is documenting people, city and their stories are important in today's world?
As our nation and world are moving towards rapid urbanization, the concepts of community living, the art of conversations and the time to know our immediate neighbour, are rapidly dwindling. In such times, and our so-called busy lives, there are seldom moments of pause, where we reflect on our immediate surroundings and listen to stories around us. Along with being a great way of knowing a city, this collection of stories get us closer to humanity. What are our future plans? Started in 2014, with our first title People Called Mumbai, the project now aims to travel across the prime cities of India and the globe. Currently, we are exploring at Ahmedabad and Kochi. A series of workshops, walkthroughs and various brainstorming sessions help us collate what to write about. Eventually, the project will travel through cities of the world to unravel fresh individual narratives that add to the whole. Moreover, for all of us working on the project, meeting the people and knowing a city/place through them has been the most inspiring takeaway. The publications are a way to share the experience.

Why crowdfunding?

Being an architect and ex-journalist with The Times of India, the Project is an extension of a personal passion for building a discourse around understanding our surroundings through humanity. People Called Mumbai is a testimony to our commitment.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 140000 in Writer & Curator Fees

Rs. 180000 in Printing

Rs. 150000 in Promotion

Rs. 60000 in Admin Cost

Rs. 70000 in Editing & Publishing

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

There are not many risks with a project of this nature. Our challenges are the process of the project itself, i.e. extensive site studies, finding the people/stories, and so on. However, meeting these very people and often the life changing conversations we have are what keeps us going. The books are an attempt to share these experiences.

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

If we don't receive enough funds, then we will not be able to bring you these wonderful stories soon. We will have to wait longer till we are able to raise enough funds, which might deter the plans to release the book in 2016-17

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

Our project is institutionalised with proper methods of accounting and auditing. The usage of funds will be genuine and recorded.
