About the project

Pão is a feature length documentary about food, culture, and migration told through the story of pão – bread – in Goa. This documentary explores the lives of stakeholders of bread in Goa, each one having a unique relationship with bread.

We all see Goa as beaches and sunsets. But born and raised here, I have seen behind the curtains. Growing up in Goa, I had my share of pão in all its uniquely Goan varieties. It is a staple food that transcends class and community.

Upon moving out of Goa to pursue my studies and subsequent career, I became acutely aware of the tight rope that a migrant has to navigate in order to fit in. Over the years, this made me turn my attention to the dynamics in the place of my birth. The winds of change are blowing across Goa, influenced in no small measure by the happenings in mainstream India. I believe the time is ripe to examine this changing identity. And bread, a food that universally touches the soul of denizens of Goa, is the ideal tool to convey the story of this change.

The film tells the story of a society that serves as a microcosm to the world at large. It is a story of culture and its journey through time.

The insiders of Goa have been baking for generations, providing Goans their daily bread - but they are fast diminishing in number. Filling this gap are the 'outsiders', who make the journey to Goa looking for employment. Meanwhile, for the returning migrant who has roots in the state, baking bread is a way to reclaim Goa of the past.

These three stories are woven together by a meal shared over bread. At the table are Floyd Cardoz, the New York based chef who works closely with the food of his place of origin, Goa; Historian and writer Fatima Da Silva Gracias who digs deep into Goan history; and activist Prajal Sakhardande, a keen observer of Goan society. The three are hosted by Pedro Novais, a young man who has returned from Portugal to his ancestral home in Goa.

About the Pão Team

Sonia’s film, Shifting Sands, on the traditional fishing community in Goa screened at Festival Pecheurs du Monde, France. She has worked as producer on independent documentaries and special features at news channels in Mumbai and Dubai.

Mamta Murthy – Producer

Nalini Elvino de Sousa – Co producer

Nalini recently completed her film, Special Envoy, which explores the life and times of Goan intellectual Aquino de Bragança and his bond with erstwhile African colonies in their struggle for independence. Her earlier works include Dances of Goa, which won the audience award at Bulgaria’s In the Palace International Short Film Festival. Nalini is a regular contributor to Portuguese channel RTPi, on a series about the Portuguese-speaking world.

Saumyananda Sahi – Cinematographer

Rikhav Desai - Editor

Rikhav’s work has been showcased at film festivals around the world. He was editor on Chaitanya Tamhane’s Court, which won the Orizzonti Award for Best Film at the Venice International Film Festival. He edited Mamta Murthy’s National Film Award winning Fried Fish, Chicken Soup & A Premiere Show. Apart from fiction and non-fiction films, Rikhav has worked extensively on art installation videos.

Why crowdfunding?

The film is made by individuals who have observed the global relevance of Goa and seek to explore it further. Crowdfunding is a way to reach out to other like-minded people to share what we believe in. We have personally invested into the project till date, and now need your support to see through the completion of the film.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 350000 in Editing and grading

Rs. 150000 in Sound design and mixing

Rs. 100000 in Background score

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

Shooting of the film is complete, reducing the risk on that front. The film is headed in the right direction – towards completion. There is a talented post-production crew all set to work on the film. The only challenge is financial, where funds are required to complete the film professionally. There is a very real threat that the film will not see the light of day if funds are not raised, but we are confident that with your support, the film will see the light of day.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

As producers we have responsibility to the film, to the team and to independent filmmaking. We have dug our heels deep into this film and will see it through. The co-producer on this film, Nalini Elvino de Sousa has recently completed her film, Special Envoy, funded through a Wishberry campaign. So we are here for the long run!
