About the project

The Queer Azaadi Mumbai (QAM) organizes the Mumbai Pride Week and the Mumbai Pride March every year. The Pride March is Mumbai’s most colorful and fun event that celebrates diversity and exhorts inclusion.

The aim of the Mumbai Pride Week is to:

1. Make the new India aware of people with alternate sexuality in their midst

2. Free the Indian mindset of myths, misconceptions and anxiety around Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities

3. Exhort Indians to accept LGBT populations as equal and contributing members of the society

4. Allow the LGBT community constitutional rights of equality & happiness

5. Prevent discrimination of any form on the basis of sexual orientation

The Mumbai Pride week hosts several activities across Mumbai to engage queer and straight individuals alike and finally culminates into the March, which is a walk from August Kranti Maidan to Girgaum Chowpatty (subject to police permissions). The Mumbai Pride Week activities will typically be flash mobs, rock show, theatre, treasure hunts, photo exhibitions, Open Mics and dance performances.

QAM is a collective of several organizations and individuals in Mumbai who represent the LGBT communities in Mumbai. The collective actively advocates for an equal rights opportunity for the communities and for a world without discrimination. QAM advocates actively for the reading down of section 377 and hopes for decriminalization of same sex loving individuals in the country.

Why crowdfunding?

The first Queer Azaadi Mumbai march was held on August 16, 2008 & was very successful; it witnessed about 500 people, who marched from August Kranti Maidan to Girgaum Chowpatty.

What are the hurdles I'll face while chasing my dream?

One of the main hurdles we will face is chasing our target in the limited period of time. We will need to make this campaign go viral in a short time and evoke support in a tangible manner.

We will definitely use the online space, but a lot of activity will happen in real spaces during fundraisers to speak about this channel of funding.

Since this is a new channel of raising funds for QAM, one of the main hurdles will also be to assure our donors of this new funding mechanism.

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

Irrespective of whether we raise enough monies or not, the Mumbai Pride March will happen. What will get impacted however is the Mumbai Pride Events in the month of January.

We are hopeful that in case this channel does not raise the target monies , our traditional sources will be able to raise the required amount. Irrespective of that we will honor our donors and provide them rewards as per the crowdfunding strategy.

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

The crowdfunding initative is being overseen by The Humsafar Trust, which is a registered charity under the Mumbai Charities Commissioner. The Humsafar Trust is a community-based organisation that has been in operations for the last 20 years, has 7 physical offices in the city and runs several HIV prevention programs under the aegis of the BMC. We have an efficient grant management system in place and rigorous accounting policies. The Humsafar Trust is one of the collective members of the Queer Azaadi Mumbai and offers administrative support to the Collective.
