A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF THOSE WHO SUPPORTED THIS PROJECT!

_____________________________

Mr. Spiny, our protagonist, is the Malabar Spiny Backed Tree Mouse, also known as Platacanthomys lasiurus.

He is a small, shy animal that is endemic to the Western Ghats (found nowhere else in the world). The mouse is mistakenly called a Dormouse and is unfortunately considered a pepper pest and comes under the vermin category of the Wildlife Protection Act; however, research has shown that it is not a pest and, in fact, is found only in undisturbed forest habitats.

Why this is important today

Children’s books today portray rodents as thieves, smelly evil companions, a witch’s sidekick, or the only nice one of them allGanesha’s little friend.

Here’s a fact from someone who spent a large part of his life researching rats: rodents are some of the most important creatures you would find in a forest or grassland system. They are pollinators of many plant species that we depend on both directly and indirectly. They manage insect populations that help farmers ensure that the yummy food they produce reaches us before the bugs chomp it up.

There are many myths surrounding these animals.

It is important for kids to understand that animals are not what they are portrayed in Panchatantra, Jataka Tales, or the hugely popular Tinkle comics. We want to change this narrative. Children today deserve books that are scientifically correct and yet tell a story that is fun for both the child below the age of 9 and the parent who reads it to them. Learning about our country’s biodiversity and the role that animals play is vital for the future of our survival as a species.

Our first book was well received and shattered the myth that bats are blind.

Our work

The NGO we work for is Zoo Outreach Organisation (www.zooreach.org) and its sister organisation WILD. We work on species & habitat conservation through assessments & needs, planning, and action; and promotes conservation welfare in zoos. We also publish the Journal of Threatened Taxa (JoTT). This  is a monthly, peer-reviewed, rapid, platinum open access, international journal building evidence for wildlife conservation and management globally. We also publish Zoo's Print Magazine, a monthly magazine focusing on communicating science to promote wildlife conservation through network newsletters, and of zoo sciences.

Payal Molur is a Mass Communications Post Graduate, and has worked on wildlife documentaries for 6 years before branching out into the world of wildlife education and curriculum development. She has always loved telling stories and now with an 8-year-old daughter, she has the perfect critic for her work.

Dr. Sanjay has spent over 25 years of his life in wildlife conservation, and has a PhD on rodents and bats. He is the founder & chief editor of the Journal of Threatened Taxa. His 5 years of field work in Coorg drives the main material for the books.

Priyanka is an associate editor of the Journal of Threatened Taxa. She also works on aquatic systems, both marine and freshwater conservation, with focus on wildlife policy matters by day. Within her hectic schedule, she turns artist and design expert for the books and brings life and colour to the words.

Ravichandran is the managing editor of the Journal of Threataned Taxa and an avid wildlife photographer. He has a cute 6-year old daughter who loves animal stories (including little pipsqueak's adventure). We are putting his extensive experience in layout design to best use, by getting him to typeset this book.

The illustrated books are a fine product of Dr. Sanjay's research, Payal's flair for storytelling, and Priyanka's colorful illustrations.

Why crowdfunding?

We decided to crowdfund the second book in the series, as we do not want to price the book high—in fact, we would like to give away as many copies as possible to urban and rural school libraries so that more and more kids have access to them. This is not for profit, but to get more scientifically correct, cool, fun story books on small creatures of India for kids and adults to read and learn from. If we raise more than the ask, it would be awesome as we can print more copies as well as start on the third book in the series—Mrs Batterji and the Earthquake!

How will the money be used?

Rs. 65000 in Writing

Rs. 50000 in Artist & Photos

Rs. 100000 in Printing 500 copies colour

Rs. 35000 in Layout and Design

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

There are very few risks associated with this project, apart from printing mistakes that may happen. However, with our team of OCD perfectionists, we feel we will be able to avoid this.
The only challenge is to get people excited about our lovely rodents so that we can sustain funding.

Why should you believe in us and why should you fund this project?

My husband and I have been working on conservation issues all our lives. We spent 6 years researching and truly understanding small mammals. We believe that the only way we can leave a living planet for our daughter and all the kids out there is by sharing our work, how we can save it, and what needs to be done, with everyone.
One of the best ways to do this is to tell stories. Stories that teach without preaching. Stories that connect us to the animals around us. Stories that are factual and not based on superstition. By funding our work, YOU will help us and the small mammals that need us.

Who else volunteered their time for this project?

The entire Zooreach team has supported this project by helping with administration, logistics and even making sure we are fed. Some enthusiastic students have been brainstorming with us on design possibilities and will continue doing so.
