About the project

Join us in bringing an innovative public art + augmented reality experience to cities across India, addressing the issue of millions of girls who disappear off the face of the earth. What is MISSING? Imagine you are walking on Chowpatty Beach in Mumbai. From afar, you see a stunning latotarger than life silhouette of a girl set against the sea. As you get closer, you hold your smartphone in front of the installation and your screen is filled with a beautiful animation that reveals the story of this girl, and the millions of other girls who disappear without a trace – taken from their homes, prostituted, lost to the shadowy world of human trafficking. Your phone unlocks the secrets of the artwork. This is MISSING – a public art project that includes large-scale installations and an augmented reality app. The project was launched at India Art Fair in 2014 to rave reviews and we are now excited to take it to cities across India, including Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

What inspired me to start this project?

I am a photographer and installation artist. Twelve years ago, I became involved with Apne Aap and Hamari Muskan, two NGOs in Kolkata working on the issue of female trafficking and the prostitution of young girls. I was shocked to learn there are over 1.2 MILLION young girls who are prostituted in India. The average age of recruitment of girls into prostitution is between 11 to 14 years of age. The fact is that female trafficking is a lucrative business with few risks for the traffickers. Astonishingly, if you enslave someone in South Asia, you are at a greater risk of being hit by lightning than going to jail! Despite the magnitude of the issue, few people really know what’s going on. After completing a residency at the School of Visual Arts in New York, I conceived MISSING as a public art project that would make people sit up and take notice.

What makes this project so unique?

Every great city in the world has iconic public art – from the Bean in Chicago to the fourth plinth in London. We think it's about time India has one too. MISSING will transform public spaces in India, creating an engaging piece of art that draws people, sparks conversations and adds beauty to our cities. The augmented reality app will allow people to interact with the art in a really cool way. This is something totally new in India!

How will I make this project happen?

I am working with the artisans of Kumortuli, who have been carving statues for centuries, to produce the MISSING installations, and talented animators and developers to create the app. I have gotten official permissions to put up the artwork in prominent public spaces in Kolkata and New Delhi and plan on launching later this year.

Why crowdfunding?

I live and breathe this project. I have been involved with the issue of female and child trafficking for over a decade and I will put my all into making this public art project happen. By backing me, you get to bring iconic art to public spaces and be a part of something BIG that is not only visually stunning but creates meaningful change.

To thank you for your participation, I have also put together some valuable rewards. I have specially created limited edition signed prints for you. As an artist, I have exhibited across the world and my works have been auctioned at Sotheby’s and are a part of distinguished collections, so there is a reasonably valuable tag to the prints. For higher donors, I have even crafted a miniature of the larger-than-life size sculptures.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 900000 in Installation Fabrication and Set Up

Rs. 400000 in App Developement

Rs. 200000 in Social Media Campaign

Rs. 100000 in Rewards

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

Public art is a fairly new idea in India, so there are some challenges involved with convincing the general public about its value. That being said, we have seen tremendous support from government officials and authorities to launch this project as long as we can raise the funds. I don’t see any challenges associated with the production of the work, as we already have created the prototypes.

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

This is an all or nothing campaign – which means if we don’t raise the full amount we get ZERO funding. Without your support, it will be very difficult for us to launch this project. Every small amount you back us with helps!

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

I am a professional artist, with exhibitions at major galleries and a bestselling book of photographs under my belt, and I am staking my professional reputation on this project. I also believe it’s extremely important to be transparent and will be sharing constant updates on the project through social media so that everyone knows where the funds are being used.
