About the project

UPDATE 1:

To say the funding has gone well is probably the understatement of the year. We have crossed 3 Lakhs already in a single day!

I'm so ecstatic at the turn out, I've decided to do something awesome and that is to call one of my heroes, the legendary Vishal Dadlani, to guest on a badass track called 'Kindness'. I've always wanted to jam with him and this seems a pretty sweet way to make it happen. It's only day 2 guys, lets see how far we can take it, and how cool it could get!

STRETCH GOAL - We have to cross 4 Lakhs for this guys! Lets do it!

We are in the news! Read the full article here

Apart from my various career roles as a radio jockey, advertising film writer and director or even my glorious 15 seconds of fame in Rock On 2! (yes, that happened), I have spent what I consider the most important part of my life, in writing and composing pop music. Given by the number of shows and performances I've had over the years, I can safely imagine that people have really enjoyed the music so far, and it has kept me and this passion alive ever since I quit my job back in 2015. I'm here now to crowdfund my first full length album LP which is a culmination of some of what I think is my best work in writing till date.

My journey so far...

The album is called 'Make it Happen' and it contains 10 songs, which draw from every single musical influence I've had in my life, fused with my thoughts on people and events that have shaped me. It's got Pop, Rock, Blues, Funk, R'nB, Electronica and Soul elements that I have used to create a seamless musical experience that has pushed well past my creative limits. I'm already really proud of it, but it would mean all that more if it involved the very people that have helped me continue this passion.

India is dominated by music that comes from movies (Bollywood et al.), and so, the small but plucky movement that independent musicians have started needs all the help it can get, and I'm hoping that an album like Make It Happen can be one of the many seminal albums that pushes the way forward for all of us in this community. I have great hopes for it to reach a number of people in India that haven't even discovered independent music yet, and internationally, show that there is high standard of music that comes from this country as well.

Tejas is a singer-songwriter from India, currently residing in Mumbai. A range of influences including 80’s pop-rock, musical-theatre and adult-contemporary songwriters, have developed into Tejas’ unique style of lyric-heavy pop-rock. Whether it is with his 5 piece band set-up or just him and his guitar, Tejas has adapted different genres of music into his own personal brand which has been staged at the biggest festivals in India including Bacardi NH7 Weekender, Kala Ghoda Arts Festival and Mahindra Blues Festival.

Tejas’ unique approach to design and social media along with his signature musical style have grown his sizeable fan base over the years to make sure his band sets are packed with manic energy and solo sets are filled with quiet listeners. After releasing his debut EP Small Victories in late 2014, he is now ready with his follow up album soon to be out in 2017.

Here are some of my tunes:

And finally here's my first EP called 'Small Victories' which I released late 2014 -

Why crowdfunding?

I am crowdfunding this project only to aid a process that could have taken the project more than the 2 years I've already spent attempting to complete this myself. It is much easier than it has ever been to make a good album these days, however, good studios still cost a great deal to rent out on an hourly basis. The process of making an album is also one of discovery, and the time spent understanding and creating the sonic element of each song is a crucial and necessary component. The funds from this project are also going to pay the mixing costs, where the songs are balanced and made to sound rich with the right equalization and dynamics. And finally a part of the funds go to mastering the album. Mastering is the final touches that a mixed track receives to give it that polished edge which songs have that make them sound warm or crispy; that spark that makes you go, "Damn! That sounds professional." Mastering has often been dubbed a 'black art' and might come across as a vague concept to describe, but it actually involves a very technical process of compression, limiting, equalization and other techniques that you can read up on the web if you are more interested in how songs are readied for release.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 90000 in Studio Cost

Rs. 50000 in Mixing

Rs. 30000 in Mastering

Rs. 10000 in Miscellaneous

Rs. 20000 in Admin Fee

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The challenge in making music, more than anything else, is that of giving the project ample time to be nurtured and the attention that it requires to find itself in the right sonic space. What that means is we like to dwell on certain aspects within the music itself and see how it feels over time. Does this song need more than just an acoustic guitar and vocals to convey the emotion in the lyrical content? Do the guitars need more grit and harshness to feel angry and loud, just as I did when I wrote the song? Is there a way I can convey the integrity of my writing without using words and vocals? These are questions I ask myself everyday, and I suppose, are a more of a metaphysical challenge that I assign to myself and my work.

The other main elephant in the room as you may have guessed already, is money. The greatest challenge sometimes is the investment involved to see your dream come alive. Art needs time and space but it also needs the correct amount of money to even make it a serious undertaking. I need your support to pay for studio time, and the wonderful professionals who are helping me create this album.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

Fund this project if you love and believe in the passion that an artist has, to create from the heart. I may have dedicated the last 2 years of my life to making this collection of songs happen commercially, but I have spent at least a decade writing and leading up to this moment which I can proudly say is my best work to date.

To reach here I've had to do jobs which I've loved, a lot of things I didn't, do a fair bit of soul-selling and your good ol' fashioned corporate work. I've played for every type of audience out there as a singer-songwriter, the good, the bad, the disinterested. I've written more than a 100 songs to get to these 10 and it's been the first phase of a career that I intend to keep for the rest of my life.

I hope that you can find it in you to see that same fire that you have or had or want to have, to create something beautiful, and share your support to make this dream of mine a real, living, breathing reality.

Okay forget this boring stuff, what are the rewards?

I'm glad you asked! I've come up with a lot of things that people will enjoy especially if you enjoy my music the way I do. The rewards are named after songs of mine, some which I have released and a few that are yet to come. Everyone who contributes to the project will get the album, so that's right off the bat a good reason to back. Think of it as literally pre-ordering the album! I'm getting some nice artwork made for the album as well and I'd love to share it with you as soon as its ready, and it will come in the form of a signed poster for most of the rewards.

I am currently working on two rewards that I think are my favourite. The first is 'So Much To Say' a songbook that will include all the lyrics to the songs I've released so far, with a basic chord chart for you to sing along and play. I get a lot of requests for the tabs for my songs so I thought this would be a great aesthetic way to release all of it. And don't worry, this is just Vol.1 of what I hope will continue into the future. The physical copy will include exclusive content with a few essays on my thoughts on writing music, and a bunch of images and stickers. Yay!

The second reward I'm most looking forward to, is the 'Make It Happen: Deluxe Edition'. This is the second wave of the album which will be out in November which is going to have a bunch of extra stuff. Bonus unreleased tracks, acoustic versions of a few songs, interviews and remixes by some of my very talented electronic producers from the independent scene. The physical copy will have some exclusive content as well.

Sessions From The Press was a video series I directed about a year ago, where we get a handful of dedicated fans for a particular band, and invite them to a private filmed gig at Cotton Press Studios in Bombay. They can interact with the band and have a QnA, and I thought this would be a really special way for me to meet whoever backs me and wants to have a chat. Plus you'll be featured in the video and also receive the uncompressed FLAC files of the audio from the performance.

I do not consider myself to be the foremost authority on songwriting, by after years of writing for ads, jingles and a few songs myself, I can share the learning I've had over time and breakdown how I write a song. I'd love to share my thoughts on lyric tricks, phrasing, progressions or even breakdown a song of your choice to get into the art of songwriting in my masterclass session.

Who are those goodlooking guys in the pitch video?

There are plenty of amazing people involved with the 'Make It Happen' LP, but the few you should know, who also feature in the video are as follows:

Aalok Padhye: Aalok is a seriously talented percussionist who is literally irreplaceable as he also is a master arranger, keys player and does backing vocals for all our live shows. From one of the first major bands in the independent community, Something Relevant, and band leader at Mauj Maharaja, Aalok has played across the world and has some major experience in the gig circuit. He also plays a mad game of Clash Royale.

Jehangir Jehangir: Yes his first name and second name are the same. From being my drummer to now the co-producer of the album, JJ has come a long way in my life as a musician, and I really couldn't see the album happening at all without him. Also from Something Relevant and now electronica duo Dirty Jays which I also guest on, JJ is one of the finest drummers in the scene and a killer engineer to boot. JJ is also one of the few people I know who's been married 3 times to the same woman.

Adil Kurwa: Right when I was forming my band I knew I needed Adil as my bassist. Supremely versatile and currently faculty at The True School of Music in Bombay, Adil more than keeps up with my jumps in genres and still manages to write amazing parts for each style. Adil has some amazing sandwich making skills and that coupled with his incredible bass prowess makes him indispensable in this project.

Jishnu Guha: Jishnu joined us a year later after spending a number of years abroad busking in England, and has chops on the guitar that I can only dream of, and as a songwriter himself AKA Short Round, his mind is set squarely in the space of overall composition which really helps my cause. Man I love this guy so much I started a company with him, but more on that later.

Warren Mendonsa: Where I do begin with this guy? I honestly think, and he probably is, the best guitarist in this country today. Apart from his guitar hero work for composers like Vishal-Shekhar, Amit Trivedi and Karsh Kale, his own project and one of my all-time favourite bands Blackstratblues has influenced a lot of my own sensibilities when it comes to composing. He produced my first EP and really set me on a path for which I have some endless gratitude. To have him on this project is an assurance that it's going to be another level of kickass.
