About the project

The Madras Mag Anthology is a unique collection of some of the best writing in contemporary Indian English literature.

MINIMUM TARGET CROSSED!

Thanks to 35 different backers, we met our minimum target amount of Rs. 1 lakh in just a day and a half! We have been expressing our gratitude for this overwhelming response on our social media pages as well as writing to backers privately... Meanwhile

OUR CAMPAIGN IS LIVE UNTIL 27 AUGUST & WE CAN EXCEED OUR GOAL!

Why do we need more money?

Since this was an 'All or Nothing' campaign we set out with the minimum amount we'll need to realise this anthology dream! Little did we know when we set out that there will be such an overwhelming response to our project and we'll end up raising our target amount in just a day and half with 42 days to spare. So instead of waiting for another opportunity to raise funds for our magazine, which we were going to do at a later date based on the success of this one, we have decided to do it right away!

What will you use the additional funds for?

With the additional funds raised we'll be able to meet these stretch goals, in the following order of priority:

STRETCH GOAL NO #1: SET UP A DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM FOR THE BOOKS

INR 2.5 LAKHS

STRETCH GOAL NO #2: PAY OUR WRITERS MORE THAN WE ORIGINALLY INTENDED TO.

INR: 1 LAKH

STRETCH GOAL NO #3: INCREASE OUR PRINT RUN! MORE READERS FOR OUR WRITERS!

INR: 85K

(SCROLL DOWN TO UPDATES FOR A DETAILED BREAKDOWN OF OUR STRETCH GOALS)

We represent new, indie literature since 2014. While we are an online literary journal, for our first anniversary, we will bring out a print version of some of the best writings in English.

What exactly is this Anthology all about ?

The Madras Mag Anthology of Contemporary Writing will feature fiction, non fiction and poetry from India and abroad. It will feature a clutch of well-written and, most importantly, well-edited pieces for the discerning reader.

What motivated you to take up this endeavor ?

In my interactions with the publishing world I have heard too many bleak things. About the wait to be published. About the very little money on offer for writers... As a lover of words and refined writing, I wanted to do something instead of just complain.

Why do we need this magazine to be published when there are so many online journals already out there?

This anthology is not trying to play to the "market" but comes as a truly colloborative, artistic endeavour. It will offer a space in print for many new writers alongside contemporary literary rockstars. With voices that are very different and ones that deserve to be heard.

How will this project change the literary scene today?

To begin with, it will introduce readers to a whole range of new writers, writing about varied topics etc. Secondly, the industry is very skeptical about the feasibility of short story anthologies. We want to show that it is feasible.

Why crowdfunding?

I am a writer myself. I have been published in several national and international magazines and have worked as a journalist in leading newspapers. I understand both sides of this puzzle well, I feel like I can do something meaningful because of this unique position I am in.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 50000 in Payments To Contributing Writers

Rs. 15000 in Design

Rs. 35000 in Printing

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

Finding a market for literary fiction and non-fiction, especially for new voices and unknown names is a challenge in itself. We live in a world where the book market is shrinking, serious writing is facing heavy competition from easy-to-consume, mass-produced formula writing, the moral police are ready to take offence at what is often the truth, books are being burnt and writers are committing literary suicide.

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

This is an All or Nothing campaign. We will not get any money if we don't raise Rs. 1,00,000. The anthology will continue to remain a dream; we will continue to fight the good fight.

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

This project is to showcase the works of other writers, not my own. I have lent my name to the project, appeared in the pitch video, all this after I quit a well-paying job to start an online magazine that pays me nothing. I have spent my personal funds to keep this project going. I will not betray the trust of my backers or hurt this project for anything.

WRITERS ON THE MADRAS MAG

16 August, 2015

Akhil Kakkar

'Madras Mag is an innovative journal that is honestly devoted to literature. It is a rare platform that publishes diverse voices from different genres. Krupa Ge is a talented and professional editor. I thoroughly enjoyed the creative experience of having my short story ‘Space Submission’ published in the April 2015 edition of Madras Mag. Every month, I eagerly await to read the absorbing work of upcoming Indian authors published in this great initiative. Anybody interested in literature and fiction should definitely read Madras Mag.'

Brian Michael Barbeito

'Working with Madras Magazine was a professional and engaging experience from start to finish. The editorial staff, thoughtful and passionate about all aspects of Madras, presented a fine content and aesthetic through and through. As a writer, I was more than pleased to see the art work that my prose was paired with. What is more, it was a rare gift to hear the pieces read by a professional actor. I was especially impressed that the reader sensed and delivered every word, sentence, and paragraph with the pauses, nuances, tones and other that the pieces were written in. Bravo to the Madras staff for their process and care and what a privilege to have been included in such a publication.'

Niyantha Shekar

Being a fiction writer, there's a ton of rejection to deal with and sometimes the rejection isn't even explicitly communicated - you send out a story, and then just wait and wait for a response, and eventually give up and move on. But when I sent a short story to Madras Mag, I got this response: "We do not like to keep our writers waiting. So you will hear from us very soon." It was such an excellent courtesy to extend, and it typifies their fantastic attitude towards writers from submission to publication.

Sujatha Narayanan

'The Madras Mag is the best thing that's ever happened to aspiring & renowned writers. A platform for thoughts & words in simple yet tastefully done pages. Inspiring initiative.'

BREAKDOWN OF STRETCH GOALS - DEADLINE AUG 27

17 July, 2015

The additional funds raised until AUGUST 27th will go towards three main stretch goals

STRETCH GOAL NO #1: SET UP A DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM FOR THE BOOKS

INR 2.5 LAKHS

If we can reach this goal, we will be able to afford to work with a book distributor and have our books sent to various stores across the country! This is a serious task that requires several man hours and a lot of money. We will be thrilled to achieve this goal should we manage to raise 2.5 lakhs more!

STRETCH GOAL NO #2: PAY OUR WRITERS MORE THAN WE ORIGINALLY INTENDED TO.

INR: 1 LAKH

When we set out, our aim was to show to ourselves and the world that we can create a market that pays literary writers. But if we manage to raise one more lakh, we will get a chance to not just pay our writers an honorarium, we will be able to pay them professional rates!

STRETCH GOAL NO #3: INCREASE OUR PRINT RUN! MORE READERS FOR OUR WRITERS!

INR: 85K

What more can a writer want than to have more readers, read her/his work? If we can make Rs. 85,000 more we will increase our print run and have extra copies on sale at our launch as well as online!
