About the project

We are building Loveability, a matchmaking mobile app for disabled people. Did you know that there is no such app in the world? Yes, let's change that! Hope you are with us!

80 million people with disability live in India, but less than 5% get married. In July 2014, we started a matchmaking agency, Wanted Umbrella, focusing on the needs of people with disability. With over 110 members & 1000 registrations between the age of 24- 49 years from 20 cities in India in six months of its existence, we have clearly shown that there exists a gap that needs to be bridged to fulfill the basic needs of people with disability.

What makes Loveability so special?

Apart from being India's and probably the world's first matchmaking app, it also caters to people with a wide range of disabilities. For example, this app will also be accessible through screen readers for people with visual impairment. There are 12 million people with visual impairment in India, of which 6 million (50%) are educated individuals. They miss out on the existing dating apps due to its reliability on pictures for judgement e.g. Tinder. Since we have realized that matchmaking among people facing disability or disorder happens more on an intellectual level or complementing impairments, Loveability focuses more on details like medication, possibility of cure, level of independence, instruments used rather than horoscopes, profession or financial backgrounds.

How does Loveability work?

While the design and development is still in progress, here are some of the features of the app:
- People can sign up with their Facebook or Google Accounts
- People can create their profiles with details such as medication, possibility of cure, level of independence and instruments used. But people can choose to show whatever information they want publicly, with the help of privacy settings
- People can view other profiles and invite them to connect and interact through our chat features

Loveability is easy to navigate and has been designed and backed by intensive research done in the last one year. Various case studies and feedback sessions have been held to incorporate the existing needs and demands of people with disability.

The video above shows a prototype with basic functionalities.

Will disabled people actually use Loveability?

People with disability, like anyone else, spend a lot of time on the internet. In fact, we did a research on the internet penetration of disabled people by studying internet usage habits of 300 disabled people. We found that 60% of our 300 interviewees spent more time on mobile since they have limited options to go out because of inaccessible location, cafes or cinema houses.

Why a mobile app?

While we have done matchmaking as an agency for over a year, the manual process is not scalable. We could only do 150 matches from 1500 registrations so far! So an app like Loveability will make many more successful matches.

Why are we doing this?

We were quite disheartened with the attitude of existing matrimonial websites towards people with disability and felt the need to do something about it. So to test waters, we began 'The Matrimony Project'. We just took a few registrations to understand the issues people with disability or disorders face with regards to matrimony and were shocked to find out that most of them did not even consider themselves to be marriageable. It was only when we told them here is someone interested in you, did they start giving marriage a thought. Our society has limited their thinking to believe that their mere survival is enough. We want to change this thinking and give them tools like Loveability to find love that they deserve, just like anyone else.

Why crowdfunding?

There is no way for disabled people to find love. Isn't that shocking? If you are shocked enough and want to make a difference with us, hop on, back this project with whatever amount you can, and spread the love.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 350000 in App Development

Rs. 50000 in UX Design Fees

Rs. 100000 in HR & Admin Costs

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

  • The concept of matrimony is challenging and matchmaking for people with disability is a whole new ballgame for us.
  • Making the app all accessible not just to the visually impaired individuals but also to people facing various other disabilities is going to require consistent research and case studying. It is a very challenging project since nothing like this exists worldwide and we are the first movers in bringing the concept to India.

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

  • If we do not raise enough money through our campaign, our operations will get affected and the application's beta launch will be delayed. We have a strong vision backed by research and numbers and need your support to execute our upcoming plans.
  • If we fail to raise enough funds, we may have to take part-time projects to sustain, which will divide our time and efforts further.

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

As you may have already seen in the video, we have the demo prototype ready. It now just awaits execution. We've been in India since a year with an office space in New Delhi, and winding up will not add any further value to our dreams of an all inclusive matchmaking app focusing on people with disability.
