About the project

'Kaala' is a short fiction film on racial discrimination against the Africans that took place in Delhi and its adjoining areas between 2016 till mid of 2017. During this period, many Africans including students and women were assaulted and few were tortured to death. Reports of murder, harassment and brutal beatings made headlines quite often.

African nationals who migrate to India in search of jobs, businesses and education are mostly branded as drug peddlers, drug abusers and prostitutes. The continuous attacks and less governance by the local authorities on such cases, have made them fear for their safety as well. However, without much opportunity back home, the community continues to live in despair.

The Film

This film revolves around a Nigerian student who has recently moved to the city to pursue his degree in IT. After a long day of exam preparation, Bryan's persuades his girlfriend Rashmi to meet him at the usual spot. Despite Rashmi's unconfident confirmation for the date, he lands in the busy area of Haus Khas Village in Delhi and unpleasant incidents begins to take place.

The story unfolds with Bryan encountering a bunch of egoistic Indian men and what follows is a series of dreadful events throughout the night.

Kaala is the first film ever made on the subject of racism in India. A film which characterises  the caged mindsets, dying humanity and barbaric attitude in civilsed times. It unveils the disturbing nature of men and its unkind methods of satisfying the false ego.

Team

Most of the actors including the protagonist, Jude Boman Tony, were non-actors. Jude, who is a also a victim of racism and student of IT is very much the character we had in the story. Although, there was intense training sessions to mould him into Bryan along with other non-actors too.

To cast an African as a protagonist in the film was a sheer challenge. Not only because it was difficult to locate one, but also for the commitment towards the film. It was not easy to access their personal space, nor was it easy to interact in the beginning. We wandered for months and ended up meeting more than 200 hundred African people in Delhi (NCR).

However, things did turn well for us and we managed to bond over teas and food. In the process, we were exposed to tragic incidents, which were extremely traumatising.

About the filmmaker - Tarun Jain

Tarun Jain is an award winning filmmaker based in Delhi and he has been involved in filmmaking for over a decade now. He has written & directed three short films which includes Kaala as well. His first short film 'Aakhir/At Last' had been to 43 festivals all over the world, winning 6 awards and 5 nominations. He is also a 'Remi Gold Winner' at the prestigious Worldfest Houston for 'Best Short'.

Amma meri/Mother' is his second film which is based on the Agrarian crisis and centers around the hazardous consequences it is having on the farmer's minds & health and continues to pose threat with the growing urbanization. The film made its European premiere at Oscar Qualifying Tampere Film Festival (Finland) and it's India premiere at the prestigious International Film Festival of India. It has travelled to over 30 festivals so far and has won 15 awards in various categories.

Why 'Kaala'?

Having made two films which had travelled to quite a number of festivals, won awards and immense amount of appreciation. We realise the strength of cinema and how this powerful medium can be used to bring urgent issues such as racism to the forefront.

One meeting with a gentleman from the African Embassy stayed with Tarun for a long time and that’s partly what inspired him to make a film on this topic. The man from the embassy spoke about drugs and the involvement of Nigerians. He said, ' I know we are labelled as drug peddlers and our women as prostitutes. I don't deny that, but not all of us are into it. Indians are also into drugs and prostitution, but do you say the same for your people?'.

Tarun could relate to his pain and he also saw the helplessness in his eyes. After the meeting, he thought to himself, ‘how can we label someone as 'KAALA' aren't we brown afterall?’

Why crowdfunding?

We're crowdfunding because racism and xenophobia is something that we need to eradicate from the bones of the society. Through this film, we're only trying to show people how horribly the victims are affected and what the shocking reality is right now. Finances are the only hurdle standing in our way because short films do not have much potential for profit making. But together, we can make this film and screen it for the masses to see.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 55000 in Final edit

Rs. 115000 in Sound Design

Rs. 40000 in Colour Correction

Rs. 40000 in Music

Rs. 100000 in Marketing

Rs. 100000 in Festival Submission Fees

Rs. 50000 in Admin fees

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The only risk associated with the project is that we might not garner enough supporters for the crowdfunding campaign and might have to shelf the project if we fail to raise the entire target amount.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

8 months of research, two months of workshop, one month of pre-production and 5 days of shoot in in biting cold winter nights is what Kaala is all about. The film promises to be a compelling watch both narratively, as well as aesthetically. If you feel like there's a shortfall of good quality cinema in India, support us. Because you'll also pave a path for other independent filmmakers trying to make good cinema on pressing current issues by showing them that they have an audience.
