About the project

This is India's first Comic Book (Graphic Novel) on Cancer, which is based on my successful novel, ‘To Cancer, With Love--My Journey of Joy’.

After surviving cancer twice, I’ve learnt of the importance of reading a joyous book that can impart hope and courage during the darkest phase of your life. A comic book is any day easier and breezier for busy homemakers and professionals. I want to help you smile while fighting this dreadful disease.

What inspired you to do this?

Having battled Cancer TWICE, I realized how grim and terrifying the journey can be. I longed to be happy, to laugh through the pain. Instead I had visitors who clucked their tongues and wished me Bon Voyage. All the books about cancer that I read had the protagonist put up a brave fight but succumb to inevitable death in the end. I was looking for courage but I only found too much grimness surrounding this subject. I wanted a “happily-ever-after” ending for myself. I was determined to live. So, I wrote “To Cancer, With Love — My Journey of Joy”. I was amazed at the response! Survivors, caregivers, adversity fighters contacted me to tell me how much hope the book had given them. At every motivational talk I attended, people would come to me and say how wonderful it would be if they could get a simpler version of my book and, then these 4 realizations hit me: 1. Readership for an entire book has dwindled 2. Attention spans have become very short 3. Everyone is looking for joy, hope, courage to handle their own personal issues 4. India does not have a joyous Comic book (Graphic Novel) on Cancer This is how the idea of creating my comic book came about.

What is this comic book about?

It is a 50-page pictorial representation of how to deal with every hardship in life with the right attitude. It has the very popular character, Carol-my alter ego, who teaches the reader how to handle life with grit, wit and joy. Although it focuses mainly on cancer, it equips the reader with the inner tools to handle every adversity life throws at us. It also attempts to raise awareness about cancer and how we can avoid it. The comic book makes for a very inspirational reading for all those busy people who are constantly “on-the-run.”

What has been my personal journey?

Life handed me a horror script — widowhood at 35, single parenting, financial hardships and relationship breakdowns. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, shortly after my husband’s death. It made a comeback in 2013, just when I sat down to catch my breath after battling through life's numerous challenges. The only way I handled it was by shifting from the victim to the victor mode. I went on to write five books, including one with Khushwant Singh, titled “Our Favourite Indian Stories”. I obtained a few degrees—Bachelors in English Literature; Bachelors in Education; P.G. in PR and Advertising and Masters in Journalism from USA. Today, I am a Corporate Trainer, Soft skills Trainer, Life Skills Coach and Motivational Speaker. I own my own training outfit. I empower teenagers to handle their lives maturely.

Why crowdfunding?

Only a cancer fighter can fully grasp the value of each breath, of how precious the gift of life is. During my pain and hardship, I vowed that since I had decided to live, I would dedicate my life to bring a smile on the faces of cancer survivors. Throughout my life’s struggles I have been joyous and I want others like me too to rally on with joy and a smile on their faces.

As a nation, we do need to loosen up a little, become less fatalistic, stop glorifying suffering and be able to laugh at ourselves and this whole human experience. Creating this comic book is my BIG dream. My only agenda is to gift India its First Graphic Novel on Cancer.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 600000 in Graphic Designing

Rs. 400000 in Publishing

Rs. 100000 in Marketing

Rs. 200000 in Administrative Cost

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The only risk is the heartbreak of not being able to reach the target amount. The challenge is to sensitize people about contributing towards the cause of cancer awareness, and help in giving India its first graphic novel on cancer. However, I feel confident that seeing the curse of cancer today and the rate at which it is galloping, people will come forward to make a difference!

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

My dream shatters, and we do not get the opportunity to bring a smile to the faces of cancer survivors and care givers of present as well as future fighters. As, it’s an ‘All or Nothing’ campaign the money goes back to all the backers and India does not get its 1st graphic novel on cancer.

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

This Comic Book is my passion — the mission for which I am living. Besides, Wishberry ensures that every single paisa is accounted for and all dealings are completely transparent. I have invested too many years into building my reputation and brand to risk it. The only place I will run away to would be to passionate funders who would ensure the book is translated into regional languages, so that more brave survivors may have access to it.
