Who is the backbone of IGNITE!?

IGNITE! Festival of Contemporary Dance is an initiative of Gati Dance Forum. Based in New Delhi, Gati is an autonomous arts initiative, that works in the field of contemporary dance. Founded in 2007, in response to the glaring absence of opportunities and infrastructure for independent dance in India, Gati has consistently searched for avenues to create a sustainable environment for the development of contemporary dance practice in the country. Both conceived of and run by dance professionals, Gati's projects address areas as diverse as pedagogy, creation, research, arts advocacy and policy, and outreach.

What is IGNITE!?

IGNITE! is an 8-day festival that gives high-quality Indian contemporary dance public visibility, showcases creativity and innovation in Indian dance, supports the development of vibrant, new artistic work and facilitate collaborations amongst a wide range of dance organizations in the country. The only festival of its kind in the country, this unique space is an attempt to nurture a cultural legacy for the future.

Why IGNITE! ?

At a time when innovation is the new language for the world and where the state of a country's arts is increasingly becoming the benchmark for its development, the conversation about dance in India largely tosses between traditional dance and Bollywood. Conceived of in 2010, IGNITE! Festival of Contemporary Dance was imagined as a space that represented an alternative to the classical or the Bollywood body-a body that simultaneously makes sense of and questions its roots as well as makes a daring leap into the imaginary.

What's new about IGNITE! 2015 ?

Currently preparing for its third edition, IGNITE! invites over 80 dance artists from India and the diaspora to map new directions in Indian dance. We are for the first time hosting a conference titled 'Joining the Dots: Points of Shift, Pause, Discontinuity and Rupture' which is led and designed by dance practitioners, and maps the trajectories of dance across forms, genre or region of work. We aim to expand into taking dance into the public realm. For this, the festival programme includes performances at sites that are not only traditional theatre spaces but open out into streets, galleries, parks and markets.

This time, we are also inviting practitioners from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The festival programme includes artists from 10 countries apart from performances by mega stars like Terence Lewis from India. Explore the complete festival programme HERE

Where is IGNITE! ?

IGNITE! will be held across multiple venues in New Delhi such as Siri Fort Auditorium, Kamani Auditorium, Sri Ram Centre and Meghdoot Theatre Complex at Sangeet Natak Akademi. We will also move into gallery spaces, open green spaces such as parks and markets. To take dance to audiences who might not come into a traditional theatre space, we have created an extensive roap map of street performances that range from North to South and East to West, to cover the entire city and not just the city centre.

Who are the people behind IGNITE! ?

The festival team is a group of young, dynamic dance practitioners who are actively working towards building a collaborative and sustainable environment for dance in the country. With training backgrounds ranging from classical to contemporary dance and everything in between, from architecture to arts management from law to academia, what ties us all together is an intense love for dance and a commitment towards creating a supportive ecology for its future.

What's in it for amateur dancers?

We believe that dance must be a part of all of us! In one way or another, it is an integral part of our social development to engage with a form of art and this may not be just in the process of learning it. Engagement from the perspectives of being an enthusiast or an audience, to appreciate or want to understand dance is as important as being a practitioner. And IGNITE! is one such space where dance is explored and celebrated in multiple ways by a wide range of people.

Why crowdfunding?

We believe in the power of the people. We want you to contribute to be able to join us in our collective vision to:

  • enable young and established choreographers in the country to continue to make cutting-edge artistic work in the field of dance
  • support the development of a new way of creating and performing dance in India
  • facilitate new expressions in dance find greater visibility and public support
  • help create alternative, community-led support systems for the arts in the country

How will the money be used?

Rs. 500000 in Artist Fees

Rs. 500000 in Venue Hire

Rs. 500000 in Production Costs

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The festival not being able to meet its budget which will result in the festival not being able to give everything that has been promised to the artists.

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

With a commitment to paying the artists well for their work, the festival team is not willing to cut back on this front. In the event that we are not able to raise the money, the festival will have to drastically scale down and we will not be able to bring all the artists as programmed. Quite apart from monetary losses, the biggest blow will be to the dance community and its aspiration to come together to create a voice for Indian Contemporary dance .

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

Each member of the team believes in a collective vision and thats why they have chosen to be a part of IGNITE! We are all here to stay! Apart from this, you just need to come watch the city centre in Delhi from 11-18 January for some explosive, high-quality and thought-provoking dance!
