About the project

Hyacinth is a dance drama romance inspired by a Greek mythology, presented by The Humsafar Trust & Directed by Sandip Soparrkar. Through the medium of dance, we aim to send out the message that love is not bound by the limits of gender, physicality and laws.

Who are we?

We are The Humsafar Trust (HST)- India's first established Community Based Organisation for the LGBTQ community. Established in 1994, HST is based in Mumbai and works on areas of health, advocacy, capacity building and research in the LGBTQ space. With staff strength of 300 LGBT employees spread across 5 offices, we advocate rational attitudes towards, sex, gender and sexuality.

What is "Hyacinth" all about?

The story of Hyacinth has its origins in Greek Mythology. Hyacinth, a beautiful youth is romanced by Apollo and the wind God Zephyrus. The story brings about all the aspects of love, tumult, envy and regret that are a part of any relationship. Hyacinth dies but, on account of love, achieves immortality as a flower. His lovers ensure that his memory does not die, and the flowers are spread far and wide. Hence, we see the Hyacinth flower present today in all parts of the world. LGBT lives are beyond sex, beyond HIV and beyond section 377. The underlying theme of the play is that Love is sacrosanct irrespective of the aspects of sexuality, gender and the physicality. This is Humsafar's project on Love. Sandip Soparrkar will be the Choreographer and the Director of the dance-drama romance. The team from Sandip Soparrkar Ball Room Studios is intrinsically involved in the project.

What motivated us to do a project like this?

A large part of the struggle of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community has been around the right to love. While in India there has been greater discussion around section 377 that criminalises same sex behaviour, there has been little discussion about the need of love and companionship amongst members of the LGBT community. We wish to change this status quo and raise the issue of love, companionship and relationships within the LGBTQ community.

There are many projects supporting the LGBT community - how is this one different?

This will be the first time that a theatre performance in a dance format will be done on this subject. We wish to make this a community owned project. This project is aimed at making the larger point that love has no boundaries.

When is the first show likely to happen? Will there be more shows?

The first show of Hyacinth will happen on the first weekend of October 2015. Yes, we plan to have more shows by recovering costs per show and managing to make this show sustainable. We plan to have the performance in many other parts of Mumbai and also go on tour eventually.

Will staging a play performance immediately change society attitudes towards the LGBT community? Will it change laws?

No, not immediately! This is a small effort and we have the support of celebrities, such as Sandip, who stand by us. This is a small effort in sensitising our bureaucrats, politicians and the Indian masses about the LGBT community and its struggles. We believe these small efforts will help us inch closer towards changing perceptions, attitudes and eventually the law.

Why crowdfunding?

We believe that human rights work is the core of all the work we do. As an organization we were established in 1994, a time when the Indian society did not believe that homosexuality existed in India. We work with corporates and advocate with governments to change laws. We conduct research with top academic institutions both in India and abroad. We are a UN learning site and receive several visits from foreign organizations to study our work. We exist as an organization with pure passion because at our core we are immersed in the LGBTQ community that we serve.

This project is an extension of the work we do and the passion we have for spreading the message of love.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 73000 in One Time Costs: Properties, Sets, Fundraising

Rs. 54000 in Production Costs

Rs. 53000 in Honorariums to Artists

Rs. 20000 in Logistics

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The main challenge will be raising a seed amount for this project and recovering the seed cost through regular screenings. Keeping the project sustainable with regular shows is another risk we anticipate but we are committed and determined to raise this amount.

What happens when I don't raise enough money?

If we dont raise enough money through the crowdfunding effort, we obviously return all the monies back to the contributors. Hyacinth is a community owned project and we wish to keep it as one. If we fail to raise the money, we might lose out on the community feeling we want this project to have since its making!

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

Rest assured, that won't happen! The Humsafar Trust comes with its credibility as India's first registered LGBT organisation, with a history of 21 years. We are registered with the Mumbai Charities Commissioner and our offices are located in Vakola, Santacruz East. The organisation is extensively audited and well documented.  You can find more details on our website We are a part of the Mumbai Pride activities and the QAM collective has regularly raised monies for the Mumbai Pride March through The Humsafar Trust.
