About the project

Jennifer Alphonsse, a passionate filmmaker from Hyderabad, started making a documentary on the nearly extinct Gond tribe and their extraordinary dance form, Gusadi. But, she needs your help to continue.

What’s Jennifer’s Story?
My passion for films started at a very young age thanks to my Father Mr. J. Alphonse who always aspired to be a filmmaker.

In 2010:

In 2014, my short film "Strangerssss" was selected at Cannes Short Film Corner and went on to win more than 17 International Awards in various categories. :)

I feel Cinema and the world in it is magical and infinitely fascinating. And storytelling, be it in any form, is the best way to put ideas into the world today.

What pushed you to make this documentary?
Three years back I visited Adilabad, a small district in Telangana, and that’s when I met this tribe called Gonds. That’s when I first saw them performing live. To say that I was blown away, is an understatement.

That’s when I started wondering why aren’t these people popular? Why doesn’t the world know them? So I decided that I should make a documentary about these tribes and showcase their “Gusadi” dance form  because the thing that worries me is that modernization has caught up with these tribal people. For survival and better standard of living, most of them want to leave the forest, villages and move to the cities. If this continues, then in another 5 years, this dance form will completely die out. Future generations will not even know that there existed such a tribe.

Jennifer with members of the Gond Tribe

How is this documentary going to help the Gond tribe?
By viewing this documentary, more people will get to experience how sacred and beautiful the traditions the Gond tribe are. The more people get to know about them, the more they’ll be intrigued to go and visit them. Tourism will be a way to bring more revenue, employment opportunities and also the government’s attention to Adilabad.

When other people experience the energy of their Gusadi dance, I’m sure they’ll love it as much as I did and it will also motivate the young ones to learn this dance form and keep it alive. That is my ultimate goal.

Why crowdfunding?

Being a documentary on tribal people who are not popular, it’s a known fact that there is no profit attached to it. That is why not many people came forward to fund it despite my going around asking for funds for more than 2 years. I lost a lot of good time doing that. Eventually, I thought that to raise funds from people who care about the Gond tribe and India's cultural heritage as much as me, will be an excellent opportunity.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 150000 in Pre-production

Rs. 380000 in Production

Rs. 100000 in Post Production

Rs. 70000 in Admin Cost

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The only risk in making this documentary is travelling to Adilabad because it's a heavily forested area, as well as to film the Gonds' sacred temples, which are situated inside deep dark jungles where wild animals roam free. Also, some of the tribe members still believe in human sacrifice, so it's a difficult task to get everyone to talk on camera as they are unexposed to the outside world.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

Together, we can try and save an entire race and its dance form from being extinct. We can also get them access to basic infrastructure, food, water, etc. If we don't step forward and help them, who will?
