About the project

Don't you want to watch a film that explains physics from a brand new perspective? Amritha needs your support to make it happen!

Ghost Electrons

A red ball explains physics to an 8-year-old girl, Naina. Naina understands physics from her own perspective as well by connecting it to an emotional level in relation to her surroundings. Quantum mechanics, Schrodinger's cat, etc. are connected to her and her parent’s state of mind. We get a glimpse of how her dog Rambo would understand nature around him as well.

A little about me

I am a student studying in National Institute of Design. Physics intrigues me because of its history. Since the time of Einstein, physics became subjective, which means that it could be false or true. We are still trying to find out why does nature work the way it does. I am trying to explore physics in a much more philosophical way in my movie. Do physics' laws work for us because physics itself is human? What happens if another species (like dogs) analysed nature like us? Would it be the same? These ideas inspired me to make an animation film.

The process and where the film stands today

I started working on the project in April. It took me 4 months to come up with this script. During those 4 months, I conducted 6 workshops as a part of my research. The research helped me study how children between 6 and 10 years would react to or understand physics (which is alien to them). The research also helped me in developing character and the script. The pre-production of the film is complete along with the animatic. The main production, sound design, editing and hiring of voice actors remain.

Some stills from my research work

Below are few stills from the animatic. (Animatic is the pre-version of the film produced by shooting successive sections of a storyboard and adding a soundtrack.)

Why Physics?

As a child, I loved physics and my mother's explanation of physics using examples from our daily life helped me understand concepts better. Physics isn't about calculations or theories — it’s about how you see the logic behind it. I often used to wonder how animals see things. That made me curious about perspective. All of this made me enthusiastically research on this subject and this made me develop an idea.

What is special about Ghost Electrons?

Let’s go back to ancient India. The Rig Veda brought about a lot of cultural change in India. During this period, people questioned many aspects of life. Through the philosophy of physics, they come across the smallest particle in matter called as 'parmanu' (atom), relativity and heliocentric model, much before John Dalton or Einstein.

Our forefathers saw physics as art and philosophy. But over the years, we began looking at physics using a systematic approach. It was rigid; with theories and laws. Many people are intimidated by physics. But what is physics really? Let's view it from a philosophical point of view and let’s make it as imaginative as the point of view of a child!

Can a mother be an electron? Can I be in different states at once? When parents argue, is that related to quantum mechanics? Is Schrodinger's cat saying that I need to choose crowdfunding or not?!

Why do you want you film to be screened at Chitrakatha?

To get one's film screened in Chitrakatha is a dream come true for us animation students. The festival is for students; by students. I will get the exposure required to showcase my film to the world. Many known animators from all over the world come to the festival to share their experience and explore storytelling. It is a brilliant platform for animators who have an idea and want to show their side of storytelling.

You will get to be part of Chitrakatha (October 22-28, 2017) as well and explore the world of unique animation with me!

Check out some goodies in store for you!

The Postcards to be shipped!

Why crowdfunding?

a) Crowdfunding is where I get to get on board with people like YOU, who can be a potential producer of this movie. b) You and I can make this big and we can send OUR film to many festivals internationally. Starting with Chitrakatha. You will get to be a part of the whole journey with me! c) I will know how many people really liked my idea no matter how different. Finally, crowdfunding will help an independent animator (soon to be!) stand on their own feet!

How will the money be used?

Rs. 30000 in Animation, Colouring and Cleanups

Rs. 17000 in Studio for sound design

Rs. 16000 in Editing and Compositing

Rs. 6000 in Studio materials and Drawing Supplies

Rs. 8000 in Hiring voice actors

Rs. 15000 in Studio for rendering backgrounds

Rs. 8000 in Admin Costs

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

a) This movie demands a lot of colourful visuals for the girl and playing with sound and visuals for the dog. Animating it requires high-level software and rendering, and most importantly, time! The biggest risk is completion of the movie taking longer time than expected.
b) Hiring the right voice actors for the ball and the girl.
c) Distribution and publicity.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

"No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world" Robin Willams

I want to showcase not a film but an idea to the world. An idea about a different angle on physics. I want you to help me build it. I have substantial amount of research to back this idea. I think this idea is interesting and I really do want to spread it around. I have worked really hard to get selected for this initiative and all I need now is YOUR support to get my film showcased at the festival. You can help me finish it and distribute it around!

Chitrakatha, what's that all about ?

Wishberry and National Institute of Design (NID) have come forward with this initiative — Script 2 Screen. It encourages animation in the country by making sure students can screen their films at Chitrakatha, a biennial, international festival where the best of the Industry come forward to celebrate and notice talent. We entered the competition and some of us were selected to raise funds via crowdfunding. Through this we will be able to finish our student films and showcase them at Chitrakatha. This is a huge platform for college students as well as those who’ve just finished college! We will be able to show our work to experts and gain so much exposure!

Future plans for the project?

I want to take the film to many famous film festivals. Based on the response, I want to make a series of it, where I'll not just explore physics, but other interesting aspects of life with Naina and her ball. Many social and philosophical topics will be covered as well.

Animation and India: Your thoughts

Animation in India is still very young. We are yet to make a mark on the international stage. Many Indian animators face issues such as budgeting or heeding to commercial needs and these stories never make it big. India is a land of beautiful storytelling, Haven’t we all heard exciting bedtime stories from our grandparents or parents? India has a rich cultural background, where we hear stories from different people living in distinctly different cultural and regional spaces. It comes so naturally. Then why is it that we don’t see it out there? We animators are still struggling with money, time and mainly the right platform. This is where you can help us get that right platform.
