About the project

What is Evening Shadows all about?

110 mins / Hindi

Director: Sridhar Rangayan / Producer: Solaris Pictures

Vasudha, a conservative mother in a small town in Southern India, is shattered when her son Kartik tells her he is gay and that he has been living with his lover for the past four years. Even as she grapples with her own fears and self doubts, she has to deal with her intolerant husband and the traditional society around her.

Can Vasudha rise above her own social dogmas and religious trappings to find the inner strength that can knit her family together? ‘Evening Shadows’ is a universal story about a mother-son relationship and its emotional strength to withstand the ravages of time, space and harsh realities.

The film, set predominantly in the picturesque locales of South India and some parts of Mumbai, will be evocative and understated, but with enough humour and drama to be engaging and create the impact.

With a strong eminent cast of renowned actors - Mona Ambegaonkar, Anant Mahadevan, Yamini Singh, Abhay Kulkarni, Veena Nair, etc - the film through its nuanced performances, strong visual and aural appeal, will transcend time and space, to become a film that would remain evergreen in people’s memory for years.

Who are we?

We are a team of dedicated film professionals with several years of experience in the industry, and award winning films to our credit. We are also passionately committed to social causes and believe in using cinema as a medium to address issues against equal rights.

The team is truly independent in spirit and have worked on some of the most acclaimed films that have challenged stereotypes, and reflected upon critical social issues through the medium of cinema.

What inspired us to make this film?

While our previous films dealt with love, passion and health issues of gay, lesbian and transgender persons, their families still remained in the background. At every post-screening discussion, we were asked about how families in India dealt with their children’s sexuality. We felt it was high time we reflected upon this.

We feel that ‘when you come out the closet, you push your mother into the closet’, as she is unable to share the truth with anyone, since she doesn’t have the support or resources to understand the issues.

The film ‘Evening Shadows’ attempts to unravel the issues and address some of the concerns parents may have, in a dramatic way.

It is also about a woman’s empowerment within a patriarchal setup, to stand up and speak for herself and her son.

Why does this movie need to be seen today?

With so many LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) youngsters in India either coming out or wanting to come out to their parents, this film becomes an important tool for those grappling with how to deal with aspects of coming out. Needless to say the film offers only an idea as to how the characters in the film, in their particular environment, react to the situation. For every LGBTQ person the journey will be unique and every parent-child have to find their own eco-system of understanding.

We hope through the film we will be able to reach out to a large section of parents and families of youngsters across India, with a very pertinent subject that touches their hearts and opens their minds to reflect upon unspoken truths.

This film intends to offer a beacon of hope to every youngster and every parent, who want to come out of the evening shadows into light of truth and acceptance.

Why crowdfunding?

Financial resources to make a feature-length film on the LGBTQ subject are very hard to come by in India, where homosexuality is still criminalized and largely considered a social taboo. While mainstream Bollywood is enmeshed in the roulette of star systems, distribution potential and market forces, there is obviously no state or government funding available for such themes. This crowdfunding component of the budget (which is 1/3rd of total budget) is very crucial as it will drive the main production of the film. We intend to go on floors mid November 2016 and we have to raise a minimum of Rs.10 lakhs through crowdfunding to enable production. We hope with generous contribution we can attempt a stretch goal upto Rs.15 lakhs.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 500000 in Production

Rs. 200000 in Post-Production

Rs. 100000 in Donation to Parent Group

Rs. 75000 in Campaign Rewards

Rs. 100000 in Wishberry Commission

Rs. 25000 in Film Festivals Submission

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The crowdfunding is all or nothing, which means if we don’t raise the targeted amount, everything will be returned to the contributors and we will not be able to go on floors. So it is important that we fulfill the target to meet production and post-production expenses.

However we are confident that people across the world will come forward to contribute generously to a project that intends to be a very important film for advocating equal rights in India. We have successfully carried out crowdfunding campaigns in the past and we have faith in everyone who has been a part of our journey for the past two decades.

What happens if we don't raise enough funds for the film?

We will definitely finish this project one way or another because of how strongly we feel about this topic. But if we don't raise the funds we need through this crowdfunding project, there will be a few more delays and obstacles we will have to work through to make our dream a reality.

How are we going to prove that we won't just take all the money and run away?

Solaris Pictures is a reputed production company that has produced /co-produced several award winning films like film Breaking Free (National Award 2016 for Best Editing) Purple Skies, 68 Pages, Project Bolo, Yours Emotionally and The Pink Mirror (Gulabi Aaina). These films have set the benchmark for LGBTQ films in India. Director Sridhar Rangayan is a multiple award winning filmmaker and a gay rights activist who has been committed to advocating for LGBTQ rights across the world. His reputation is impeccable and he inspires faith and trust across the world.

It would be a pleasure to be a part of Evening Shadows ( संध्याछाया as we call in Marathi ). I guess the story is pretty much something the filmmakers have lived through. All of us have been through similar family issues while dealing with our queerness. So we will deeply connect with it. All the best and see you soon.

Hi Sridhar, When I decided to make this contribution, I know that I am joining a cause which will be n utmost necessary step towards the Queer movement in India. And also with a confidence that the funding is going to a creative group of people whom we can trust to have an impact which strenthen Human Rights Movements as I see them as pioneers in this field. Having the society, government and the Indian Penal Code rejecting rights of Queer people living in the largest democracy, it is the family, in which, the sexuality-gender-minorities seek solace. To ensure that this very strong support channel can hug them with all their love and liberty, films like "Evening Shadows" are really a necessity. So keeping my words short, let me just look forward for another marvelous creation of yours. Hugs, Anirudha Sen
