About the project

Cards vs. Sanskaar is the ultimate party game for liberal millennials and other alleged anti-nationals. It is a twisted Indian take to the hugely successful Cards Against Humanity, a funny party game played by millions of people around the world.

How did this happen?

On the 1st of April this year, we launched the Instagram handle of our small, brand new design studio Smarter Than A Waffle with a prank - Cards Against Sanskaar. A twisted Indian take to the hugely successful Cards Against Humanity, a funny party game played by millions of people around the world.

We asked people to sign-up for preorders and in return, they received a Visa to Pakistan. And that was supposed to be the end of our joke. We underestimated how many people wanted a Cards Against Humanity pack within the Indian context and how well the name resonated in the present political and social climate. What was supposed to be only liked and shared for a day among friends and family went on to become viral.

Over 2000 people ‘signed up’ to preorder and hoped the game would be real. Looking at the response we received we were convinced that this was an idea we needed to bring to life.

...the nation took our prank WAY too seriously.

Over the next few months, on our time off of client work, we wrote hundreds of cards with joke setups and great punchlines to go with them. We first started testing the game with a small group of friends and then slowly expanded to other circles, including regular gamers. With every session we filtered our content to create something fun and relevant. Over 150 people have played various versions of the game so far and the response we have received has been simply amazing.

We also kept our audience on Instagram engaged uploading some personal work and positing progress on the game front. Our Instagram followers are the real deal. They have somehow held on to the idea and have been extremely supportive throughout the last 8 months.

We don’t have any real game design experience, but, with this format being able to write jokes is enough and we can do that all day long. We iterated with the look of the game quite a bit too, putting all our design skills to good use.

To put this in the hands of people who want it, we had to change the name to Cards vs Sanskaar. To their credit, Cards Against Humanity had sent us an email very early on noting what all not to do to avoid any trademark tussles. We followed it all. While we initially were reluctant to let go off that catchy name, we have come around to love Cards vs Sanskaar.

We went through a bunch of names before we settled on one.

Here's what didn't make it.

So here we are - the game fully conceptualized, designed and tested and this time it is not a prank. We've designed the game to be a significant marker of our times.

______

We plan to print a limited edition decks of the game. There’s also other stuff we designed as rewards for our backers- Postcards, T-shirts, tote bags and hand-painted pins to go with the game.

We’ll use the money raised in the crowdfunding campaign to go into production - to print, warehouse and ship the game and the rewards out to you.

We walked into this project unknowingly, but it seems we have gotten to where we should. Make social lives fun again!

Meet The Team

Wondering who we are? Click here to meet us!

We run a design studio called Smarter Than A Waffle. Both of us are batch-mates from Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore. We started our collaboration early on in college when we used to make funny videos and jokes about our college life and upload it to our Facebook page. We spent a couple of years and a bit more working in the industry. Eventually, we thought it is the right time to start off on our own and did that in March 2018. Humor forms a huge part of our work environment and try to infuse it in our work as well. We have worked with some great clients in the last few months in collaboration with some amazing designers. Both of us have a varied skill set which helped us along making this game come true.

Watch her here

Adrita

I am an illustrator, graphic designer and animator. I worked in a corporate job for a year or so and followed that up with two years of freelancing. I run a side project called Das Naiz and worked on another, Gods Taking Selfies, which was nominated for the Shorty Awards. I like to use public domain pictures and paintings to create humorous collages and gifs

Karan

I have dabbled in multiple roles in my time after college. I started out as a graphic designer, did a stint as User Interface Designer in a startup and then a year of documentary filmmaking as a director, cinematographer and editor. I made a documentary, Rolgol, as my diploma project in college which won me National Award for Students (Best Editing).

Why crowdfunding?

We are a 7 month old design studio coming to grips with ordinary struggles of starting our own venture. In our short life-span we have come to understand the big ol' concept of economy of scale. When we decided to make the game happen, we contacted a few card game printers. All of them in unison told us that they'd take a minimum order of a 1000-2000 decks at a cost unaffordable at our infant age. We dipped into some amount of research and numbers (and optimism) and felt relatively confident that some people would want to purchase this game. And then, it was only a small leap in thought when we decided to crowdfund.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 300000 in Printing

Rs. 25000 in Shipping

Rs. 25000 in Warehousing

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

In a country such as India, making a party game with such a context apparently comes with a certain amount of risk. However the two of us believe in bringing some humor out in the world and have been lucky to find a growing community online that supports us.

We are also fairly new to the world of mass printing. We have spoken to multiple printers who have gone back and forth on their pricing, some of them have been unresponsive and others have cut the call on us. However, there are a couple of them who are terrific people and we have settled on before we pick one.

Being only the two of us working on the whole project, we are stretched a bit thin over the multiple moving parts involved in working at scale. However, if we manage to raise the money here we plan to hire a couple of people to help us out and share the load as well. We are excited to induct more folks into our team. While the process of printing, warehousing, packaging and shipping is long and hard, it is only a matter of time till it gets done.

Why should you believe us and why should you fund this project?

Alongside working on client projects for our studio, we have spent a large chunk of time over the past few months to create a game that we think a bunch of people will find fun to play. Apart from being passionate about the project itself, we feel the time is right and the need heavy for adult games to find place on Indian tables and shelves.

I have been waiting for this game ever since 1st April 2018. I really hope your team meets the funding target. Can't wait to get my hands on this! Am tired of playing 'Social Humour' which contains many cards, blatantly copied from CAH and was a let down to some extent. It would be great if your packaging is in a hard box rather than a paper box. Also, there is no mention of how many cards this game will carry, it would be great to know the number of question/answer cards on the campaign page. I really hope the card count matches that of the original CAH game.

CreatorKaran Dilip Worah

1 December, 2018

...

Hey Jigar, thank you so much for your backing. We really hope we reach the goal soon and ship out even sooner than expected. We've made sure we aren't copying the same tropes or cards as CaH, but keep the humour as hearty. And yes the box will be a hard box. So far, we have been testing with around 300 cards in our deck. It would be great if you could attend one of our playtests and test-drive the cards first hand :) And yes, we are working on around a 100 more cards on the side if they can make the cut. Thank you again for backing us.

We've got news

100% goal reached!

6 December, 2018

To our own disbelief, we have managed to reach our goal in exactly 4 days! A big thank you to everyone who has contributed, shared and supported this project through its journey. We have resumed talks with printers for the game and merch and hope to start the printing very soon.

Last weekend, we played many rounds of the game with plenty of you and others in Mumbai. While we are happy with the content we already have and it has been well liked everywhere, we'd like to take a week or so to refine it more and perhaps even add more cards to it.

We have crossed the 100% mark but contributions are still pouring in. To that end, we are considering extending the campaign for a little longer to raise more funds to be able to print more decks and host (free) playdates in more cities.

We'll keep updating you folks with every step that we take towards getting the deck out to you. Do follow us on Instagram(@stawdio) if you don't already for regular updates - for we are most active there and have the most amount of fun there as well.

You guys are amazing.
