About the project

'B. R. Ambedkar - Now and Then' is a feature length documentary film that explores Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s life symbolically, politically, and delves into representation and assertion of Bahujan politics in today’s time. Questioning the institution of caste in India, this film is a commentary on religion, revolution, politics, and the freedom of speech.

For so long in India, Bahujan narratives - especially in the media and cinema have often been appropriated and told through the upper caste lens. How will they tell our story without having lived through it?

The mechanisms of oppression are manifold in this country. When a voice comes from an oppressed community, and especially that of a woman’s, it offends those who are of a privileged caste and gender, and is therefore silenced.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

‘B R Ambedkar Now and Then’ documents the conflicted zones of Bahujan communities in India while also telling their tales from a Bahujan Feminist’s perspective - a voice which has for so long been silenced from mainstream academia, film-making, storytelling, and media.

"Caste is a curse and we need to get rid of it in a practical and humane way."

There are 3 reasons that I embarked upon this path:

  1. Casteist Violence

Rohit Vemula, an Indian PhD student at the University of Hyderabad, was a Bahujan activist. Upon facing caste-based violence from politicians and other activists in his college, he committed suicide.

  1. Freedom of Expression

The attack on academic institutions, especially educational schemes and scholarship for marginalized community by the government is a threat to knowledge production and freedom of speech & expression of one and all.

  1. To fight the good fight against oppression of marginalised communities.

I’m a Bahujan. And my film itself is a revolt against this oppression. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s principles are needed in the mainstream media now more than ever.

I would like to ask the following question through my film: Who is appropriating Ambedkar? Why, and why now?

About the film

Here's the Hindi/Marathi version of the above video:

'B. R. Ambedkar Now and Then' draws a parallel between Ambedkar’s larger-than-life fight against an omniscient Brahmanical hegemony during the Indian National movement and the contemporary times in India when his minority status and constitution are once again becoming a challenge for the intrepid Brahamanical intelligentsia. This feature length documentary of 90 minutes argues and explores ideas of religion, revolution, freedom, and Indian mythology, touching upon the scheme of caste in Indian politics and academia. It delves deep into issues such as voice of youth, representation, identity, symbolism, condition of the oppressed and status of women.

How

With Ambedkar himself as the central character, 'B. R. Ambedkar Now and Then' juxtaposes Buddha Poornima celebrations at Shravasti; Babasaheb’s birth anniversary; Dhamma Chakra Pavataan at Deeksha Bhoomi, Nagpur; and Mahaparinirvana day at Chaitya Bhoomi, Mumbai, against very personal, unexplored facets of Babasaheb’s life.

The footage shot over the course of years covers various Dalit Bahujan protests, marches, and conferences of significance all over India. The film features interviews of artists, scholars, professors from Harvard, London School of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dehli University, University of Hyderabad, and Tata Institure of Social Sciences; activists, student leaders, musicians, and filmmakers from Bahujan background and otherwise. ‘B. R. Ambedkar Now and Then’ also touches upon the role of the Fourth Estate, the popular Indian media and the politics of its narratives.

Detailed budget breakdown:

Why crowdfunding?

Coming from the background of a marginalized community and having acknowledged my limited resources, I still went out to make this film with my own money and with some help from family and friends. It has been a long ride so far and I think it will be a rough ride going further as well - but I'm willing to go all the way! But passion can get you so far. In the end the money is required to fix the logistics of making a film. I believe that the film truly represents the people! It talks of their experience and struggles - something that the popular media and cinema have not done before. Bahujans are represented in this film, and this is more their story than mine. I am just a medium. I have hope from my Ambedkarite family; film fraternity and anyone who is a fan of Babasaheb to contribute their bit.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 410000 in Editing

Rs. 390000 in DI Grading

Rs. 260000 in VFX

Rs. 310000 in Sound

Rs. 230000 in Music

Rs. 400000 in Promotion & Distribution

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

The risk is if I don't end up raising Rs. 20 lakhs which I need to finish this film, the quality of the project may suffer. The film has already required a huge funding which, despite my limited resources, I have managed to gather. Now, to finish this film, I need support. If I don't raise the funds, all my work will amount to nothing!

We have worked on this for two and half years, shot across 8 states and several cities; gone from pillar to post to come this far, walked miles, slept on floors, invested time and energy without pay. Besides, I met numerous people from my community who came to help in any way they can. And they are also waiting for this story to be told. This is the only way I can empower them - by giving them a space and mic to talk.

Why should you believe me and why should you fund this project?

I am here to tell a story that’s not been told and I believe stories have the capacity to move people and reflect their true struggles. Unless our stories don’t provoke people to honestly look around at what’s going on, action becomes impossible! I wouldn’t say I am actively part of this movement, but I believe Babasaheb wanted the daughters of India to break the shackles of oppressive order, and find freedom. It's time now. If I feel free in this country it’s because I know Babasaheb has empowered me and his contribution is detrimental to the making of this modern India. He not only empowers me but my entire community and many others!

Besides, what's the point of going to premier schools such as IIMC, Delhi, FTII, Pune and now TISS, Mumbai if I can’t be of any service to my community and country?
