About the project

This is a feature length documentary that follows two courageous women as they travel their countries looking for the answers to some important issues.

What is Azmaish about?

This film is about two women, Indian actress Kalki Koechlin and me, Pakistani filmmaker Sabiha Sumar, who go on an extraordinary journey across India and Pakistan to understand why people in our countries are turning to religious extremism for answers. Pakistan is overwhelmed by its war on terror. With religious extremists attacking school children, have their supporters realized that violence is not the solution? Meanwhile, just across the border, India is struggling to hold on to its secular identity under the weight of rising Hindutva groups. What does this portend for our neighbours; for our next generations? The film explores these questions through the lives of ordinary people. Kalki and I travel far and wide, meeting people from all walks of life, trying to understand the pulse of our countries.

A lot of movies have been made about India-Pakistan. What’s unique about Azmaish?

Films have invariably sensationalised the Pakistan-India divide, adding spice with ominous insinuations of unresolvable contradictions between the two nuclear-powered neighbours. But is that how the majority of people in both countries view the interactions between the two? In this documentary we aggressively question the media’s mystification, give a voice to the silent majority and take bold steps towards peace between the two countries.

After having made numerous documentary films, what made you decide to make a movie on this issue now?

To me, good relations between India-Pakistan mean a lot. I lived in Delhi for 10 years and I have worked with artists in India through which I discovered the commonalities in our two cultures that give us a chance to build peace. What drew me to making Azmaish is the rapid shift towards religiosity and the weakening of secularism in the region’s leading actor, India. This is not only disappointing for those of us who are looking for a secular future for our region but also alarming because what does this mean for a possible secular future in Pakistan? Is it only a distant dream?

How was your experience while making this documentary?

It was a great experience! What is most exciting about a documentary is that it becomes a journey of self-discovery. In many ways, I saw a reflection of myself that helped me understand both India and Pakistan better. I encountered my prejudices, my fears and my wishes. I had to re-define my questions, my premise. Sometimes, I ended up changing the entire plan because the person I wanted to meet refused or we didn’t get permission to shoot at a certain location. In a feature film the shoot must go according to plan; your dramatic arc is firmly in place; in a documentary the obstacles push you to think about your questions again and again, with every problem you are forced to sharpen your story and you re-discover the dramatic arc on the editing table.

What exactly will the funds be used for?

We have completed our shoot and the material is very rich. We can make a very strong story that has never been told before. For us to do that, the picture and sound editing, grading and sound mix has to be done well and that is what the funds will be used for.

What are your plans for this movie once the film is complete?

The film will be broadcast on German and French TV. It will also go to festivals around the world. We hope to set up a traveling cinema and take the film to small villages and towns in both India and Pakistan and encourage people to discuss the theme and the issues that Azmaish raises.

Why crowdfunding?

This documentary is not just about a small group of individuals, it isn’t fiction, it isn’t make-believe. It is all very real, and it deals with something that is affecting every life in these two countries. So when we ran out of funds and channels to get these funds from, it only made sense that we reach out to the people who this film is about. That’s why crowdfunding.

How will the money be used?

Rs. 600000 in Editors Fee

Rs. 150000 in Editing House

Rs. 250000 in Color Grading

Rs. 400000 in Sound Design

Rs. 450000 in Artist Fee

Rs. 150000 in Admin Fee

What are the risks and challenges associated with your project?

We have completed our shoot so our risks are minimised now. And I have a really great Editor who wants to work on the film. Now the only challenge left is financial. We really need the funds to complete the film in a really good way that brings out the best in our material.

What happens if you don't raise enough funds?

If the money raised doesn’t meet our target amount we will return the money to the contributors. It's an all or nothing approach. Having said that, such a situation will leave Azmaish in a very precarious position as we have invested 3 years into making this film and we need to complete it by April 2017. We have already spent more than 200,000 USD on the film so far. So I am really hoping that you will help us finish the film through Wishberry.

How am I going to prove that I won't just take all the money and run away?

Take the money and run?! Run where? I have been making films for more than 20 years - I have shown my work at major international film festivals. Moreover, I am under contract to deliver the film to German and French TV. So there is no chance. Relax, filmmakers are not pirates! :)

Hi there, Partition, India and Pakistan and how ideas have evolved about the countries have deeply affected me. Fabricated perceptions are ruling the public mindset. You are indeed doing a great job highlighting the truth behind all the lies.. Best wishes and a token of support from my side.
