Mother! Darren Aronofsky journeys into the deep recesses of the human psyche

If there is one thing that the trailer of Mother! portrays, it is the fact that the human mind is capable of unnamable acts of horror and this facet makes for spellbinding cinema. In line with Black Swan, Mother!’s premise is dark and is aimed at telling you that what appears to be normal, might in all probability be a slow and artistically charted descent into chaos and madness.
Mother! has been the talk of cinema circles for quite some time now. Aronofsky has been cryptic about the plot and little detail (barring a poster that had Jennifer Lawrence holding her bleeding heart!) was let out. In a recent interview, the auteur explained his motivation behind the film:
I had this idea, and I felt it rise up in my head. I took a long weekend and got into this fever dream and just pumped it out. [Laughs] We’ll see what the results are. It’s been an interesting way to approach it — trying to capture a single emotion and trying to tell that two-hour story out of that emotion.
The trailer lets you in but only barely. There is still a lot that remains under cover and the film makes its world premiere at the 74rd Venice International Film Festival!
Till then, here’s what artist James Jean came up with after he was commissioned by Aronofsky to design a poster for the film!
Here are a few interesting facts about the film:
- Mother! was shot on the 16-mm film format. Digital cameras were used only on one day.
- This is Aronofsky’s first film which will not feature musical genius Clint Mansell’s haunting background score.
- Mother! will release in the UK and US on September 15.
