Crowdfunding Takes Bollywood Beyond Borders And To London

Posted on 17 February, 2018 by Team Wishberry

Battle of Bollywood is the world’s largest Bollywood dance competition. The last three editions have been held in the UK with the support of celebrities like Terence Lewis and Jeya Raveendran. This year, they will return to the Sadlers Wells Theatre, in London where 16 competing teams will take the stage to show their moves.

The event organizers are raising Rs.10 lakhs through their crowdfunding campaign and have already collected Rs.2.2 lakhs from 24 different people! We caught up with Rishi Tibrewal (Co-founder of TURI Events) to know more about this epic battle.

What draws you towards Bollywood music and dance?

I grew up in the UK just listening to that one radio station that played Hindi songs and waiting for Bollywood film tapes which were being sent from India! It was all about discovering the newest tracks from legends like Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan. Now, the focus has shifted from the foundations of Bollywood to newer more foreign tastes. I wanted to ensure that the past is not totally lost as we look towards embracing the future! Both me and Tushar Singhania, (Co-Founder, TURI events) are very passionate about dance and music as we danced at University and believe that the performing arts are the backbone of any culture.

Why did you want to create this dance platform?

The obsession with Bollywood doesn’t end in India.

Out here in the UK, I think I’ve seen more people dance to Bollywood music than I ever did back home in India!

There are tons of reality shows and dance platforms within the country but what about the tons of Indians living abroad? When we, (Tushar Singhania, Co-Founder TURI events and I) realised that there was no platform for Bollywood dance lovers to showcase their skills in the UK, we decided to create one ourselves. One, that would allow dancers from all parts of the world to perform on music they grew up listening to and get recognition and mentorship from other established artists in the industry.

How have the previous events been received?

The last three years have featured 46 teams who have performed live in front of 5000 people along with veterans like Shiamak Davar, Juggy D and Terence Lewis as a part of the judging panel.

We set out to make the dance community stronger by creating a family atmosphere that brings together artists and audiences of all backgrounds and its safe to say that we have been not been disappointed with the response.

So, how will this year be unique?

Last year, 23 teams participated, Shruti Shah (Shiamak), Gauri Sharma Tripathi (Mumbai), Jeya Raveendran (JRDA) were the judges and the winning team is now Notts Dhamaka.

And this year, 16 armies are going to battle it out to be crowned the champions of The Battle of Bollywood 4 with Shivani Bhagwan and Chaya Kumar (BhangraFunk), Shruti Shah (Shiamak Davar’s principal dancer) and Naz Choudhury (who performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert) on the judging panel.

What’s more, this year a part of the proceeds from the show to the Akshaya Patra Foundation to help feed thousands of children across India.

Why did you decide to go in for the crowdfunding route?

The event has now reached a stage where just having sponsors is not enough! We now need the masses to take notice of the beautiful artists out here and help them grow over the coming years. In the past, we’ve had to compromise on the scale of the event by cutting down a few expenses, to ensure that the show goes on. But this year, we want to leave no stone unturned. As Battle of Bollywood returns to the stage at Sadlers Wells Theatre (London), we have decided to go to the crowd for support.

What’s in it for the funders?

We are offering discounted tickets, VIP access, and post-show party invites for funders on Wishberry.
