First time at Comic Con Mumbai? Here's the help you need!

Posted on 11 December, 2015 by Team Wishberry

It’s that time of the year again- the Christmas for every comic geek in the country! Yep, we’re talking about Comic Con. Now, although it doesn’t happen on as grand a scale as the ones abroad, fans will agree that it’s an affair worth attending. After all, it’s the one time in the year when comic lovers and creators are together under one giant roof sharing the one thing they love the most. For someone who’s always had eyes on this event, but never gotten the chance to attend, this year is as good a time as any to start!

Comics and Manga Overload!

Comic books have always been the main attraction of the convention, obviously. You’ll find just about any kind of comic book- from the popular Marvel and DC comics, to Indian names like Amar Chitra Katha, Chacha Chaudhary, popular Manga and anime works, as well as many new and upcoming comic artists. This is the best place and time to discover new and old comics, because chances are you won’t find them at a bookstore! Tip: Do make it a point to pick a comic book from the convention as they are sold there at a cheaper rate as compared to online.

To Cosplay or not to Cosplay?

Cosplay basically means dressing up as your favourite comic book/TV show character. The sheer amount of dedication that people put into getting this right is incredible and pretty much the highlight of the whole event! Professional Cosplayers from India and abroad attend the event. Also, most attendees keep up the event spirit by dressing up in various costumes which range from comic books to movies to fantasy characters. The convention also holds a cosplay contest- this year Mumbai Comic Con is giving away a trip to the Beijing Comic Con to anyone with the best cosplay! You can and should dress up too, although it isn’t mandatory. You can always get your pictures clicked with cosplayers (no, they don’t mind). Tip: If you plan to dress as one of your favourite, make sure you wear comfortable footwear as there’s a lot of walking to do at the event grounds.

Celebrity Hour!

The celebrities gracing Comic Con aren’t your typical cinema stars. They’re geekdom royalty- the ones who bring the Sci-fi and comic book characters to life on the big screen! They’ll be there to talk about their past work and upcoming project. You can even get your books and merchandise signed by them, as well as click pictures with them! Last year, Mark Gatiss (Doctor Who and Sherlock co-writer) was at Comic Con Mumbai. This year, Doctor Who fans are in for a treat again, as Sylvester McCoy will be attending at Mumbai and Delhi. Kristian Nairn (plays Hodor in Game of Thrones) was at the Delhi Comic Con! Rob Denbleykar (creator of Cyanide & Happiness), Gavin John Aung (creator of Zen Pencils) and Joe Harris (writer of Great Pacific and The X-Files: Season 10) will be attending the convention in both cities. Tip: If you’re a fan of any of the guests, do not forget to carry any goodies/merch and get it signed by the popular Hollywood actor. Also, make sure you buy your token to meet Sylvester McCoy.

Pre Comic Con events

Writers, artists and illustrators are called for a panel discussion where they discuss all things comics. It is a great listen if you want to update yourself with what is coming next, what new characters are getting their own books etc. You also get to meet the comic authors and participate in some fun games with a shot at winning some exciting prizes. Tip: Sit in the front few rows and ask good questions, as some discussions end with a few freebies.

And, everything else...

  1. Special guests– The maker of the disturbingly funny Cyanide & Happiness, Rob DenBleykar, Joe Harris- author of X-Files comics, and the creator of the much-loved  Zen Pencils, Gavin John Aung Than will be attending the Comic Con Convention in Mumbai. Kevin Eastman, co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will also be doing a Skype session at the convention!
  2. Branded Merchandise: You can buy original action figures, lightsabers, DVD’s, T-shirts, posters and other collectibles from the stalls at the convention!
  3. Artwork by Upcoming Artists: Apart from various collectibles and merchandise from upcoming artists, there is an overload of start-up made toys, decor, stationeries and the likes, and a growing amount of movie/series related goodies as well.
Comic Con has a lot of interesting stuff to see and do. It holds something for every fan, kid, adult and onlooker. And if you're not a comic fan, you're most likely to become one!
