Advantages of Crowdfunding for Comic Creators

Posted on 25 June, 2016 by Team Wishberry

A lot of shit goes down between creating a comic and putting it out there in print- like, really expensive shit. Then there’s the whole problem of niche readership, finding these people and getting them on your side. Plus how do you even get the blinded-by-mainstream-publishers to look at you?

Too many problems. One possible solution- crowdfunding.

Say, what?

Crowdfunding is an innovative way for comic artists and graphic novelists to raise small sums of money from a large number of people through the internet. When copywriter and doodler, Cyrus Daruwala, wanted to publish his first graphic novel on his experience in Mumbai’s local trains, he took the crowdfunding route and raised a lakh for printing, artwork and design. Soon after, he published his second graphic novel Painful People too.

In fact, internationally, aside from mainstream comic publications like Marvel, DC and Image, majority of comics have turned to crowdfunding on Kickstarter for their comics and graphic novels.  Some of the most noteworthy comic books like The Order of the Stick reprint, Code Monkey Save World, Failing Sky, Lunarbaboon, Cerebus Archive have not only been made possible through crowdfunding, but some also went on to win notable awards.

Here’s why crowdfunding works for comics and graphic novels:

It gets you the money

Publishing, marketing, distribution, paying the people involved etc. is expensive (as we’ve all just seen). You can’t possibly afford all the costs on your own, and loans are scary. But, crowdfunding? Asking for smaller amounts from a lot of people in exchange for fun and inexpensive rewards does sound viable.

You get backers instead of buyers

The difference? Backers are the guys who are rooting for your idea and helping enrich the creative scene, as opposed to buyers with whom the relationship is nothing beyond a mere transaction. Do these lovers of great ideas exist? Yes! And crowdfunding is how you find them.

It’s a great marketing strategy

Every promotion effort that you’ll make to create the buzz for your crowdfunding campaign, will also help you create conversation about your comic book itself. Through crowdfunding, you’re basically telling everyone, “Watch out, I’m on my way”.

You get publishers’ attention

If you succeed at crowdfunding, you have your own community of readers & supporters, and the numbers to show. Paired with your kickass ideas, it’s pretty much what you need to make publishers sit up, take notice and take you more seriously.

Got a comic book idea that you can’t wait to publish? You know what to do.
