Pioneered by Bharatendu Bhattacharya in the 1800s, Hindi theatre first started taking roots in the towns of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Since then, much has happened on this circuit, a whole crop of awesome theatre groups have been putting up plays in Hindi and continue to steal our hearts to this day. Here are some of the best ones.

Ekjute Theatre Group

Ekjute has been actively performing since 35 years now. Started in 1981 by Nadira Babbar and Raj Babbar, Ekjute Theatre Group has gone on to become one of the most influential theatre groups in India. They’ve been credited with introducing various new trends and techniques in Indian theatre as well as translated works of prominent playwrights such as Albert Camus, John Osborne, Agha Hashr Kashmiri. Some of their recent plays include Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan, Begum Jaan, among others. Additionally, they also do theatre workshops.

Ansh Theatre Group

Ansh was established in 1993 by Makarand Deshpande. Through Makarand, Ansh is known for plays that are experimental in nature but satirical and thought provoking in subject. The most popular plays by this group are Seema Badnam Hai, Sir Sir Sarla, Miss Beautiful, Joke and Imli, Papita & Tarbuz.  

Ank Theatre Group

Ank Theatre Group, started by Dinesh Thakur in 1976, is considered to be the largest performing Hindi Theatre Group in the country! In their 40 year long journey, they have managed to build a repertoire of plays that cover almost every genre of theatre - Greek classics, originals, adaptations, comedy and satire, thrillers, tragedy, socially relevant subjects and epics. This is also the only group to have performed the most number of plays written by Vijay Tendulkar.

Arpana Theatre Group

Arpana Theatre Group, based out of Mumbai, was started by notable theatre personalities like Sunil Shanbag, Reetha Balsavar, Lata Sharma, Shishir Sharma, Aakaash Khurana and Utkarsh Majumdar in the year 1985. Arpana’s plays are known for its strong performances, minimalistic setup and creative use of music and design. Although they have done plays in languages such as Marathi and Gujarati, they are also known for their Hindi plays such as Bade Bhaisahab, Garam Kamra, Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon among others.

Bhoomika Theatre Group

Bhoomika Theatre was started in the year 1989, and since then has gone on to become one of the most popular theatre groups in Hyderabad. Bhoomika has constantly strived to bring in newer and more innovative forms of narratives in theatre. Their plays are either in Hindi or in Telugu. Some of the most popular Hindi plays include Hattamala Ke Us Par, Nagamandala, Insaan Ho Toh Leek Se among many more. Bhoomika Theatre Group has won National Awards for its Hindi plays.

Rangshila Theatre Group

Rangshila Theatre Group is a Mumbai-based group formed in 2008 by Avneesh Mishra. Run by young theatre enthusiasts, Rangshila has staged plays all over the country and performed at major theatre festivals like Bharat Rang Mahotsav hosted by the National School of Drama. They are also known for their acting workshops held under the banner Parados to Stage. Notable plays by this group include Unhe Kuch Kehna Hai, Teesveen Shatabdi, The Great Indian Master Drama Company. Anyone we missed?
