Right now there are 100 million adults in our country looking for a job. And 50 million children who’d do anything to get out of theirs.
For thousands of children in this country the day begins with a bucket of cold water thrown at their face. From then till night falls they are on their feet clearing dishes, cleaning drains, clambering through toxic waste…all for two meals a day and the hope of a better future.
Is there any kind of hope for these kids? Sure there is, if you care enough.
This year I have chosen to run the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon for Childline 1098, an organization which has a pan India network with over 5000 workers working to return children their lost childhood.
Whenever you see a child in distress you can call 1098, a national, emergency, free, phone and outreach service for children in distress, providing access 24 hours a day. Since its inception in 1996, CHILDLINE has responded to over 20 million calls from children and concerned individuals for – medical support, child labor, physical, mental and sexual abuse, runaway and missing children, education, abandoned infants, drug and substance abuse……..This organisation works at the grass root level with vulnerable children and ensures that the rescued child is safe with family or within institutional care.
Currently in 183 cities all over India, CHILDLINE is at the juncture of its expansion to every district in India, in order to be accessible to every child in need of care and protection.

About the project: CHILDLINE is a unique example of co-operation between government and non-government agencies, between corporate partners and bilateral agencies, between concerned individuals and the community at large, the child being at the centre of this web. CHILDLINE’s strength lies in the unique partnership model that it follows.
CHILDLINE India Foundation (CIF) is the umbrella organisation for CHILDLINE across the nation. CIF undertakes replication of CHILDLINE, networking and facilitation, training, research and documentation, and awareness and advocacy at the national and international level.
CHILDLINE does not stop at being an emergency helpline. Because children need systems that are inclusive and driven by them, systems that will enable them to respond to their feelings and needs at any time, CHILDLINE works at sensitizing its collateral agencies — police, hospitals, city municipal corporations, and health care systems — to respond to and develop support interventions for children in difficult situations. These are official systems those themselves often bear violently on the lives of street children in India.
The CHILDLINE model brings together players from across sectors in a service-delivery and advocacy model that benefits all: with a telephone in hand, street children can reach out and support each other and create a self-help peerage; nongovernmental organizations have access to a low-cost system that addresses one of the most frustrating aspects of their job — being at the right place at the right time; and the government partners with citizens in a consultative and collaborative process to protect the rights of the child, thus playing out an active role as signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
About CHILDLINE India Foundation: CHILDLINE 1098 is national, 24x7, free, emergency phone and outreach service for children in need of care and protection. As soon as a call is received on 1098, a child protection service involving the local level district/state administration, NGOs, Police, Health, Education, Labour departments, the Juvenile Justice system, is set in motion, and does not stop till the child is rehabilitated with family or safe within institutional care.
Supported by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, CHILDLINE is present in 182 cities, across 26 states and has responded to over 20 million calls since its inception in 1996.
