Frequently Asked Questions

Section 1: More About Wishberry & crowdfunding

What is Wishberry.in?

Wishberry.in is an online crowd-funding platform for creative, social & entrepreneurial projects. Projects across the following genres can raise funds on Wishberry:
•  Films
•  Music
•  Entrepreneurial ventures
•  Games
•  App
•  Art/photography
•  Dance
•  Fashion
•  Social causes
•  Comics
•  Sports

What is crowd-funding?

Quite literally crowd-funding means reaching out to a crowd for raising funds. The crowd can include family, friends, supporters/fans, colleagues, random people, and the likes to associate with a project by contributing funds in return for some really cool rewards like Producer credits in films, VIP passes to music concerts, exclusive merchandise, etc. The concept plays on the belief that not many people can cut a large cheque for your project, but they can chip smaller amounts. So if you reach out to 2000 people for Rs. 500 each, it is likely that 1000 people will actually give and there you can make 5 Lakhs, quickly and easily!

How does crowd-funding work?

Say you want to make a film & you need funds, you can create a crowdfunding campaign for your film on Wishberry.in. Your campaign page will consist of some key elements -information on the movie, why are you crowdfunding, your fundraising target and list of rewards such as producer credits, autographed CDs etc. that you are willing to offer for each amount denomination. You can also put up a pitch video (recommended), explaining potential contributors about your project and why would you like them to be associated with you. Your campaign link will be powered by our payment gateways and people can go to the link, chose the amount they want to pay and check out using their debit/credits cards or even order cash/cheque pick up from home. And that’s it, that’s how you can crowd fund!

Can Wishberry be used for anything?

Wishberry is a platform for anything creative and out of the box. Projects could belong to any genre - Film, Music, Literature, Sports, etc. If it has a definite goal and the end result is a completely finished product (a film, music album, EP, a competition, an app, game etc.) Wishberry is the sought after path for every project.

Who is this CROWD

There are 3 sets of audiences that a project creator ideally targets - the known (friends and family), the acquaintance (employers, clients, colleagues) and the unknown. First come the 3F’s- Family, Friends and Fans of the project; they not only fund but help in spreading Word of mouth that would ultimately gets your campaign viral. Beyond your network, Press, Blogs, Twitteratti, Facebook are also means that act as sources of garnering funds for your campaign. All Wishberry campaigns have seen an equal mix of known and unknown people contributing to the campaigns.

Why will the CROWD give to my project?

One, because it is really cool! Two, because it is very innovative of you to have reached the crowd instead of going through the usual rut of the traditional funding channels who take up way too much time and also take ownership of your work. Three, because you are offering rewards in return for the crowd’s contribution, rewards that are exclusive & inaccessible in general, like VIP tickets to film premiers, invite to the launch party of your film/music project, autographed CDs, producer credits etc.

What are rewards?

Rewards are exclusive incentives that a campaigner has to offer to his/her project’s contributor so that the contributors are gratified for their contribution. These rewards should consist of the following elements:
•  The product itself, duhh!,
•  Recognition to the contributors such as name on the wall, film credits etc.
•  Experience; invitation to film sets, workshops, product launch
•  Momentos; signed CDs etc.

Overall, the rewards should have value for the money the contributor is putting in.

Section 2 a): Questions for campaigners – Creating campaigns

Who all are eligible for creating a campaign?

Anyone, above 18 years of age and holding an Indian bank account can submit a project for review. Upon positive review, the project own can create crowdfunding campaign

Ques. So I want to crowdfund a project, how should I start?

Ans. Here’s what you need to do in 4 simple steps:
Step 1 – Drop us a quick line about the project you want to crowdfund for at info@wishberry.in
Step 2 – We will then send you a form that you will need to fill with your details. We require some crucial details about you and your project before we can give you a ‘go-ahead’
Step 3 – Once you have filled the complete form, we will review your details and revert to you within 2 days
Step 4 – If it is a go-ahead from our side, we will create the page for you & share the link, so you can happily start crowdfunding! If not, we will send you a feedback on why we think your project is not suitable for crowdfunding and you can reapply after you have worked on our suggestions

Ques. So what are the details that you require about me and the project?

Ans. Need the following:
A. Your information
   •  Your background/work ex
   •  Links to your social media profiles (FB, Linked in)
   •  Links to your previous works,
   •  Press articles about you/your work, if any
   •  Recommendation of your work – need someone from your field of work to send us a few lines on your work and your capability to deliver the project you are looking to crowdfund
   •  Your contact details, pls send phone number

B. Your campaign information
   •  Project info – What is the project?
   •  Amount required for crowdfunding
   •  What will be the crowdfunding amount used for. Please send expense details
   •  Rewards you want to give out to your contributors & by when will you be able to distribute them
   •  Pitch video (a quick 2-3 minute video, about the project and why should people fund it.Make it fun, not boring!)
   •  How many people in your personal & close network do you think will come forward and contribute? If you were to put an approximate but realistic number to these people, how many can you think of?

We will send you a form to get all the above information

So how will you evaluate my project?

Good question! We review and evaluate a project on the basis of five criterions:
 •  Campaigner’s capability – We will check your background experience in the field of work that you want to start your project, see examples of your previous work and see how well do you get recommended by your peers. However, we DO NOT reject any project on the basis of the project owner’s level of experience. Then what will be the difference between us and the big daddies? Ha ha, so all novices are welcome
 •  Project appeal – This is an important criteria for us. We would generally give a go-ahead to projects that have crowd-appeal, that people can connect with and get excited about funding it. Hence, it is also important for us to know about how many people in your personal network support your idea and will contribute  •  Pitch video – Pitch videos are great way of connecting with your audience, they help you pitch your project to the audience and provide the necessary information they need to know to get interested and excited about funding your project. We look for clarity of information, see whether the key messages like what is the project and why are you crowdfunding are covered or not. The timing should not be more than 2-3 mins and it should clearly audible
 •  Rewards: While coming up with rewards, keep in mind the following things:

  •  They should start from the lowest possible denominator; Rs. 200, 500, so more people can chip in
  •   Each reward should have value for money; don’t be too restrictive, be generous, after all, these people are making your dream come true. So if you can give a workshop for Rs. 500, or autographed momento for Rs. 200, why not?
Rewards should consist of the following mix:
    •  The product itself, duhh!,
    •  Recognition to the contributors such as name on the wall, film credits etc.
    •  Experience; invitation to film sets, workshops, product launch
    •  Momentos; signed CDs etc.
Delivery time should not be more than 1 year

How long does it take for a project to go live?

Once your project receives a go-ahead from the Wishberry Review team, it takes only about 24 hours after that for a campaign to go Live.

Can i do flexible crowd-funding with no specific target?

While we strictly do not allow this, we can make some exceptions in case of crowdfunding for a social cause.

How long can i run my campaign for?

You can choose between a timeline of 30 days, 60 days or 90 days. However, campaigns cannot be extended beyond 90 days. If a campaign needs an extension, Wishberry decision on the same will be final.

What are the charges involved in crowd-funding?

We charge 10% of the target amount. This is inclusive of the payment gateway fee that we have to pay our online and offline payment gateways, which is anywhere between 3-5%.
We charge Rs. 5,000 as an upfront payment, for anyone who wishes to get a creative branding background for their campaign, which we design for them. The branding background allows a campaigner to have a custom designed template about his project at the background of his campaign page and is also allowed to give sponsor credits/logo branding to any corporate who may be sponsoring/backing him/her
Note: These are the latest charges, but will be applicable to all campaigns starting January 1 st 2013. These are not applicable to any live campaigns and live campaigns will continue with the old fee model. Any confusions regarding this, please write to us at info@wishberry.in

What if I am not able to raise my target? Will I still be able to get the money I have raised?

Yes, we will transfer any amount that you have raised out of your target. However, anything less than your target, will incur a fee of 20% or double the charge that Wishberry charges to its campaigns. So for example, if your target it Rs. 100, till Rs. 99, you will be liable to pay double the fee of Wishberry, which is 10% of the target amount. If you meet your target, you pay only 10%.
Note: This is the latest policy and will be applicable starting January 2013. However, this is not applicable to current Live campaigns who fall under the old policy. Any confusions regarding this, please write to us at info@wishberry.in

Are there any taxes on the Wishberry fee?

Yes, we will deduct 12.36% of Service tax on the Wishberry fee. NOT on the total amount raised!

What are the payment options for contributors?

Anyone can use debit/credit cards through our payment gateway CC Avenue. One can also order cash/cheque pick up at their doorstep anywhere in India, except a few cities.

Can people contribute from abroad?

All International contributions are also processed by CCAvenue. All major International Credit cards are accepted.

Why do i need a pitch video? How do i make a good one?

A pitch video is basically a 2-3 minute video featuring the campaigner, who needs to talk about the project, why is he/she crowdfunding, what will the funds be used for, why should people contribute and what’s in it for them. Since audio-video information is a more powerful means of communication than the written word, the pitch video always proves effective and validates the project.
The pitch video doesn't have to be of high professional standards. You can shoot one in your house or in your backyard, even with a mobile phone camera. Upload it on Youtube and share the link with us.
We just look for clarity of information and see whether the key messages have been covered or not.The timing should not be more than 2-3 mins and it should clearly audible

Can i limit the quantity of perks/rewards?

Yes, you can give away exclusive limited edition rewards to your contributors like passes to the premiere screening of the film or exclusive merchandise. You could add a “people limit” to these incentives if you want to give away just a couple of these exclusive rewards o the first few contributors.
You can add the “people limit” on these incentives by Logging into your page and clicking on Edit details. In the incentives list, just add a number in the “Add people” tab on the right hand side of the incentive when you edit it. These details have pass through the Wishberry team before being updated on the page.

How should i price rewards? How do i charge shipping costs?

Be smart while pricing the rewards and conscious about providing value for money as well. You should consider all costs that you will incur in making the reward and shipping it and add it to your price. You can also triple your cost and put that as a price for a reward.

Can my project raise more money than the target?

Yes, your project can raise money more than the target but only within the chosen timeline; if a campaign’s target is reached before the end of the campaign’s timeline, the campaign can go on and can accept more funds.

Can i run more than one campaign at a time?

Ideally no, because getting funds for one campaign is a full time commitment. But we can consider case-by case

My project was declined by Wishberry review. What do i do?

We would have given feedback to you with the reasons why you campaign has been declined by us. We would request you to work on the feedback and re-apply to us.

Is it mandatory to offer rewards?

It is mandatory to offer rewards, but the following campaigns are exempt from offering them:
  •  When a campaigner is raising funds for an NGO in an event (marathon, cyclothon etc.)
  •  When a campaigner is raising funds for an individual beneficiary (an acid victim etc.)

It is important to offer rewards for all other type of campaigns to encourage contributors to fund a project and to offer a gratification value in exchange for their funds. Also crowdfunding should NOT be looked as asking for charity for any other projects (not falling in the above two category).

Can I just offer equity as a reward?

No, the rewards offered should not contain any sort of profit/equity sharing in the project being crowdfunded. But if a project creator does want to share profits in the project they could simply ask their contributors to connect with them directly.

Section 2 b): Questions for campaigners – Managing campaigns

Ok, so my campaign has started, now what?

Here are the key things you should get started with in order of priority:

  •  First things first, share the campaign link on every possible personal network – email friends, family, fans, put up link on social media (and do this excessively across the campaign time line
  •  Apart from asking for contributions, you must think of innovative ways to engage your social media network on content of your project as well. Create polls & start discussions around the theme of your project, ask people for their ideas to help you better create the project, get feedback on your project idea etc.
  •  Secondly, THANK every contributor on social media; this encourages them to help you spread the word!
  •  Thirdly, religiously execute the marketing plan that Wishberry will provide you after the start of your campaign, so that you can amplify your campaign beyond your personal networks. NOTE: One of the key reasons for failed campaigns have been the ignorance/failure to execute the Wishberry marketing plans, so please take this seriously

Hmm, so how does Wishberry help in marketing my campaign?

So Wishberry helps in marketing a campaign at 2 levels:

  •  We have designed a marketing kit that basically consists of typical MUST Dos for amplifying campaign. We can send it across to you once your campaign goes LIVE
  •  Secondly, we send marketing plan, especially tailored for your campaign & project, which will include online/offline communities that connect with your project & might help in amplifying your campaign and social media plan on tweets, posts, and crowd engagement. However, we send this across only after we see you hitting at least 10% of your target amount

How can I access my campaign page to make changes?

After creating your campaign page, we will send you a username and password that you can use to make changes to your page. Once you login using the details, you will get an ‘Edit details’ option, on the top right corner of the campaign page, which you can click to reach the backend

Can I change my password?

Yes you can change your password, under edit details

What changes can I make on my campaign page?

All elements on your page can be edited but with certain limitations:
  •  The text/content, pictures, background & video on your page, can currently be edited only by Wishberry, so you can send an email about the changes you will require to the Wishberry team member who will be communicating with you and he/she will make the changes immediately
  •  Rewards can be changed by the contributor directly by using the login details. But should not be changed ideally once the campaign goes live. However, if a reward has not yet been claimed by a contributor, then it can be changed. Even if one contributor has claimed it, we do not allow changes to it
  •  Updates: the updates section can be used directly by the campaigner, for putting up videos, pictures, content etc.
  •  Time period of the campaign cannot be changed by the contributor; only after taking prior permission from Wishberry

How do i post my campaign widget on various websites and blogs?

The campaign page provides you with a small widget tab below the video/picture on the campaign page which you can click on and copy-paste the link code to share the widget on other websites and blogs

How do i get analytics for my campaign?

At present, you can send us an email about finding out the analytics. We can send you the data. We are working on making it accessible to campaigners automatically in the coming months

How can I be assured about the transparency of fund transfer?

Wishberry takes careful measures to make sure there’s complete transparency maintained when it comes to funds. So these are the following measures taken care of:
  •  Once a contribution is made, whether online or offline, a three-way email goes out, to the contributor, to the campaigner and to Wishberry
  •  Campaigners have the option of checking their contributor list by using their login details
  •  The campaign page has a barometer upfront with information on money contributed, number of contributors, money left to be contributed. It also has no. of people against each contribution price. Furthermore, the campaign page displays names of all contributors under the “Contributors” tab
  •  At the end of the campaign, Wishberry sends out an MIS with all contributions and contributor details

When are the funds transferred?

We transfer funds only after the end of a campaign.

Where do the funds get transferred?

You will have to provide us with valid Indian bank account details. We can make a Net transfer to your account or even cut you a cheque.

Can you give me the funds in cash?

Are you kidding, NO. We have to be extremely accountable and transparent with the funds raised so no cash transactions are possible.

Will you share details of all my contributors, their contributions and what rewards each is entitled to?

Yes, of course, at the end of the campaign, we will send you an MIS detailing out the name of contributor, contributions made by each, address, contacts, rewards that each contributor is entitles to and mode of his payment. The MIS also gives details of how much money will be transferred after payment gateway and service tax deductions.

Many of my friends have been complaining that their online payment is not going through. What do I do?

First of all, please notify Wishberry about each such failed transaction, so we can take it up with the payment gateway and check where the problem is. We will then connect with the contributor, who was trying to make the payment and ask him/her to make the payment again after the problem is rectified, or take his/her payment order on call for cash/cheque pick up.
You can ask your friends also to try a few times because the internet connection sometimes is the main reason for such failed transaction.

How do projects get featured on the home page?

Only the projects that achieve 20% of their target amount get featured periodically on the home page. It is completely Wishberry’s discretion to host a campaign or not and for as long as it wants.

Why do offline contributions ordered via cash/cheque pickup (via Gharpay) not show up immediately on Wishberry?

It is because we wait till the order is picked up by the Gharpay representative, as there are chances of order cancellations

Can i retry my crowdfunding campaign if it was unsuccessful?

No, Wishberry does not allow retrying a campaign for the same project. However, we can take this on a case-by-case basis

Section 3: Accountability

Who is responsible for completing a project as promised?

It's the campaigner’s responsibility to complete their project. Wishberry is not involved in the development of the projects themselves.

Does Wishberry guarantee that a project will be completed?

Wishberry does not guarantee completion of any project.

How does Wishberry ensure that the campaigner is credible and that his/her campaign is legitimate?

Wishberry makes certain checks to ensure the capability and credibility of campaigners so that contributors are well-informed before they can contribute to a certain campaign:
  •  The project owners capability, work experience etc., contact are put up on the campaign page so that contributors can conduct their own assessment of the project owner/campaigner before contributing to his campaign
  •  Our review team consists of industry experts who vet most of our projects and give us consultation on the legitimacy of target amounts
  •  In some cases, we ask campaigner to provide us industry referrals about their work, that are displayed on the campaign page

Even after all the legitimacy & fraud checks, can the project completion be guaranteed?

No, project completion cannot be guaranteed and Wishberry can only do its best when it comes to doing strict reviews of project campaigners, and hence takes measures in assessing Credibility and Capability.
In general, contributors are advised that they are contributing to an idea, and not to a finished product/project. So the contributors are definitely at the risk of coming across incomplete projects that they contributed to. So we leave it up to you to make your own judgment about the merit of a campaign before making a contribution. To help you make an informed decision, we can surely support you with information about the credibility and capability of a campaigner.

What should campaigners do if they're having problems completing their project?

First and foremost, keep up the communication with your contributors about the hurdles your facing. Keep them updated with the delays and their reasons.
It is fine and not uncommon for things to take longer than expected to come to fruition. Sometimes timelines of a project do not go according to plans due to many external factors but it very important to keep the contributors informed. Do not piss them off, by just cutting off communication as you will be under a risk of losing your credibility. A jilted contributor has complete legal powers to file a suit against you.

What if the campaigners are unable to complete the project? Is there a refund?

If campaigners are unable to complete the project, they are firstly encouraged to keep the contributors in loop about any delays, hurdles etc. and then come to mutual understanding and agreement on refunds or any other way of reconciling with the contributors and gratifying them.
Note: Wishberry does not get involved in such situations and requires contributors and campaigners to connect directly and come to a consensus.

Can’t Wishberry do the refunds in cases of incomplete/stalled projects?

No, Wishberry cannot do a refund once the money has exchanged hands; from Wishberry’s to the campaigner’s. Then the contributors should connect with the campaigner to demand refunds if required.

Are the campaigners legally bound to fulfil rewards?

Yes, according to the Terms & Conditions signed by Wishberry via a Memorandum of Understanding, a campaigner is legally bound to fulfil the distribution of rewards to his/her contributors.

What if Campaigners are unable to fulfil rewards?

While Wishberry may or may not choose to take legal action, contributors are definitely encouraged and empowered by the Terms and Conditions mentioned above to take legal action against the campaigner directly. Furthermore, the campaigner will put his reputation at risk by not fulfilling rewards and will be banned from using Wishberry. Wishberry will further notify other crowdfunding websites about the campaigner’s inability to fulfil rewards and hence the campaigner runs the risk of being banned from many such funding channels.

How can I as a contributor evaluate a campaign? How do I make sure, the campaigner is genuine and not committing any fraud?

Wishberry has very strict fraud prevention measures, to help contributors make informed choices. We help contributors in evaluating two important parameters – Credibility and Capability – to ascertain that a campaigner is genuine and not committing fraud.
To help you judge the capability & Credibility of the campaigner, here’s the information you will see on the campaigner’s page:
   •  Social media links of his/her profiles (Linked In, IMDB, Facebook, Twitter etc.)
   •  Links to showcase his/her previous works
   •  Work experience
   •  All his/her contacts so you can conduct your personal assessment as well

Please note that Wishberry only provides information required to make informed decisions but will leave it to the contributors to make final decisions about project they want to contribute to. We strongly encourage contributors to personally connect with the campaigner as well if required.

Section 3: Information for contributors

How do I find projects on Wishberry to contribute to?

In case non-FCRA registered NGOs (read: NGOs that are not eligible to raise foreign funds) crowd-fund on Wishberry, then only domestic Indian contributions are allowed as per Indian government regulations. Don't worry, in this case you will see a popup warning you not to contribute if you are not residing in India!

What checks and measures does Wishberry take to ensure Campaigners are genuine and nor fraudulent?

Wishberry has very strict fraud prevention measures, to help contributors make informed choices. We help contributors in evaluating two important parameters – Credibility and Capability – to ascertain that a campaigner is genuine and not committing fraud.

How and when do i get my reward?

Every campaigner mentions the approximate time by when he would deliver the reward. Typically it can be anywhere between 1 month to a year. Please check the individual campaigns to see the time period of reward distribution

How do i check on my reward delivery?

Contact your campaigner directly via email, phone, FB, Twitter etc. He is liable & legally bound to give you a response on the delivery of rewards

How do i get a refund for my contribution?

If the campaign is over and money has exchanged hands ie., Wishberry has passed on the funds collected to the campaigner (which we do at the end of the campaign), then you have to connect with the campaigner directly for the refund required.
If the campaign is still on, and you want a refund, then you have to let Wishberry know within 12 days of making your contribution, so that we can refund the amount without the payment gateway fee. If you write to us after 12 days, then we can refund the amount but the payment gateway would have cut its commission of 3-5%, which cannot be reversed.

Does my contribution amount show on Wishberry?

Of course, the amount reflects on the Wishberry page, but not your name! We conceal the amount paid by each contributor and only display their names

How do i contribute anonymously?

Simple, while filling your information, put “anonymous” as your name in the form

Who is responsible for sending me my reward?

The campaigner is directly responsible for delivering rewards. Any queries on rewards should be directly taken up with the campaigner.

Do i get tax deductions on my contributions?

Not all campaigns provide tax deductions, especially the ones which are of creative, non-social and private nature. But some social campaigns, if led by NGOs or involve NGOs, definitely provide tax deductions if the entity has necessary legal clearances to provide these deductions.

Can i create a giver profile?

Not yet, but wait, we are working on it!

Section 4: Critical info for social campaigns (important because we work in a different way in cases of social fundraising)

What kind of social campaigns do you allow on Wishberry

We allow three kinds of social campaigns on Wishberry
1. Campaigns for a cause – Individuals connected to any social cause, be it raising funds fund for a victim, or be it raising funds for a social project like planting trees are eligible for raising funds on Wishberry. Here are a few examples:
  •  Two British Indian women setup a rural community radio: http://www.wishberry.in/Join-us-on-The-Road-to-Uttarakhand-15101
  •  Two college students plant trees: see here http://www.wishberry.in/Support-Project-35-Trees--14320

2. Celebration for a cause: Individuals wanting to celebrate their special occasions like birthdays, weddings etc., for a social cause can raise funds for the same. Why would individuals do this? Well on any special occasion one ends up getting unwanted or "recycled" gifts even if we write "Blessings Only" on our invitation cards, and we all are asked "what we really want" by our friends, so why not prevent useless gifting and make our friends' lives easier by asking them to contribute to a cause instead? See a few samples:
  •  Merlia raising funds for Teach for India on her birthday - http://www.wishberry.in/Merlia-Shaukath-Tanseer-s-Birthday-Gift-Registry-14281
  •  Hugh and Karuna raising funds for Akanksha Foundation on their wedding - http://www.wishberry.in/Hugh-and-Karuna-s-Wedding-Charity-Page--14689

3. Sports for a cause – Individuals participating in marathons, cyclothons or any kind of “thons” can run for a cause, cycle for a cause and raise funds for the same. For e.g., http://www.wishberry.in/Arun-Arora-s-campaign-for-eliminating-preventable-blindness-13862
Key thing in our approach is that we ONLY entertain campaigns that are driven by individuals. The money raised could go to an NGO of their choice but the one raising funds, driving the campaign, shouting about it, SHOULD be an individual who is directly concerned with the social cause!

So are NGOs not allowed to use Wishberry?

NGOs can use Wishberry in the following ways:
  •  They can reach out to their donor database and ask them to celebrate their occasions for the NGO and raise funds via Wishberry. See example (http://www.wishberry.in/Merlia-Shaukath-Tanseer-s-Birthday-Gift-Registry-14281)
  •  They can get runners of the large marathon and cyclothon events to Run for the NGO’s cause (http://www.wishberry.in/Arun-Arora-s-campaign-for-eliminating-preventable-blindness-13862)
  •  They can reach out to corporates participating in a Marathon/Cyclothon and ask their employees to run for the NGO and raise funds via Wishberry (http://www.wishberry.in/Advent-International-Ran-the-Marathon-for-Akanksha-12231)
  •  They can reach out to individuals/volunteers to help them raise funds for their specific social projects

NGOs are restricted but not barred completely from using Wishberry to raise funds for the NGO as a whole, for its general expenses etc. The NGO needs to have a champion and a specific project to raise funds on Wishberry and we allow NGO-only campaigns, which do not have an individual champion on a case by case basis
