The merciless act
Sexually harassed Sonali Mukherjee of Dhanbad, Jharkhand had the guts to lodge complaints about her offenders, Tapas Mitra, Sanjay Paswan, and Bhrahmadev Hajra, her neighbors, only to meet a merciless tragedy--on April 22, 2003, Sonali was severely injured in an acid attack by the assailants that left her with a burnt face, burnt body, blind and partially deaf. She was just 17-years-old then. The accused were immediately taken into custody, but were released on bail in 2006. She and her father approached the high court, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, MPs and various other authorities for justice, but no one listened. Since then, the accused are roaming scot-free. For 9-years she has been fighting a case against them and requesting the authorites to cancle their bail, but with no success in her favor. She has been in extreme pain since the incident, and doesn't have the capacity to withhold it anymore - neither the money nor the hope. Therefore, today, she demands either justice and help in treatment or permission to end her life.
What can we do?
We can make a point. The Indian Government may show complete apathy, but we, as citizens of the world – people representing humanity – can show that we care. We can stop her from crying for permission to end her own life, and give her a renewed and respectable one.
